Description: Behind the town of Oliena rises majestically Monte Corrasi, kingdom of limestone, culminating at 1463 m as the highest point of the entire Supramonte. It is a mountain with a thousand facets offering great variety of routes and thus very frequented by hikers. However, there is a portion of this territory that due to its ruggedness and seemingly impassable appearance remains outside common hiking routes. It is the North-West ridge of Supramonte di Oliena, where a fascinating karst plateau ends suddenly with very high vertical walls. The route name comes from a large steep canyon with its namesake needle representing the most characteristic part of the hike. Looking at this area from the underlying town we have always been fascinated and attracted, and in autumn 2012 after a long series of inspections involving several members of the I SIRBONI group we created a loop route to visit it. Now we have decided to perfect it and make it accessible to all with signage and description. The itinerary starts from Tuones locality, from which after climbing to Pradu clearing where the white road ends, we head North beyond Punte di Sa Carabidda and Ortu Camminu to find the start of Brancoi canyon/gorge. From this point we begin the real excursion venturing into a rock chaos where progression is characterized by a long series of unique and mandatory passages to link without error, among majestic limestone walls. Once descended the canyon we continue South to close the loop returning to Tuones. It is a spectacular itinerary in currently unusual places characterized by marked verticality, panoramas and extraordinary landscapes. Always pleasant, without dead points it never challenges those who undertake it, the Brancoi Loop is probably destined to become one of the "classics" among niche itineraries.
