Description: Between the towns of Asuni and Samugheo, near the confluence of the powerful torrents Rio Araxisi and Rio Mistu, above a large rock nave, one can visit the ruins of an ancient castle. It is the Castello di Medusa, a fortification built in the early Middle Ages on the limestone rocks of Sa Conca 'e Su Casteddu whose walls end abruptly and vertically over the gorge where the Rio Araxisi flows. Right on these walls, the namesake Via Ferrata del Castello di Medusa has been built. Of excellent quality, with a steel cable that instills security (in some sections 12 mm in diameter), this aerial route winds counterclockwise around all the walls below the castle. In addition to taking place in a spectacular intact and wild environment, what characterizes this via ferrata is also an unexpected passage through a hole with exit on the opposite side. The route uses various natural ledges alternating with full wall sections and, excluding a few meters where some arm strength is required, offers easy and relaxing progression. Since the traversal times are relatively short, it is advisable to proceed calmly to fully enjoy the exaggerated beauty of the surroundings where rock and tangled vegetation fiercely compete for space. Calculate about 1 hour, 1 hour 20 min depending on the group. For this reason, I recommend combining the via ferrata with a visit to these places with an alluring wild appearance, starting from the descent to the foaming Rio Araxisi (Rio Manno a little further downstream), where on this occasion we 'played' with a zip line to go from one side of the torrent to the other. Thanks to the creators of the route.
