Description: Historical WWI memorial trail between Passo Valparola and the summit of Piccolo Lagazuoi at 2,778m. A sort of open-air museum in the heart of the Dolomites. In 1915, at the start of the conflict, the Austrians withdrew to natural borders capturing nearly impregnable observation points used as firing or spotting posts for artillery. The Kaiserjäger, the Emperor's elite troops, built trenches and galleries to counter increasingly insistent Italian attacks from Col de Stria opposite Lagazuoi. Only the formidable action for courage and mountaineering skills of Captain Martini and a handful of alpini managed to conquer the ledge (later called Cengia Martini) directly below the Lagazuoi summit, sheltered from Austrian artillery. An outpost was then created from which to excavate the rock to build a spiral gallery to reach the summit and blow it up. The Austrians withdrew before the finale.
