Description: The Kastel (Serbian Cyrillic: Кастел) is a fortress on the Vrbas in the city center of Banja Luka, the capital of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are only a few clues as to who and when this structure was built, but there are indications that a castellum already existed here during the Roman Empire. Over time, the facility was adapted by the respective rulers for their purposes. It is assumed that the current Kastel occupies only a quarter of the originally built area. The outer walls of the castellum are built from massive stone blocks and provided with loopholes. Archaeological finds from Roman times confirm the assumption that the structure was actually used as a Roman castellum.
