Description:
The Capanna Mambretti is an unguarded refuge located at 2004 m in Val Caronno, opposite the Scais-Redorta group. This valley is reached from S.S. 38. Just past the city of Sondrio, with a bit of attention, you will notice the turnoff for Piateda, a village at the entrance to Val d'Ambria. You go up the valley floor for about a dozen km to Vedello, where you turn left following signs for Agneda. Shortly you reach the homonymous plain (1228 m) at the end of which you can park along the road edges. Attention, from here car transit is allowed only to authorized persons (a permit is available in Piateda). Those undertaking the hike in late spring might immediately notice the magnificent spectacle of a waterfall ending its jump into the chasm carved into the snow accumulation of an avalanche. We cross it to reach a narrow concrete-bottomed road among pines and larches that climbs with a series of hairpin turns to a masonry bridge from which you can observe a beautiful formation of "Giant's Kettles". From here an easy trail allows us to reach the guardians' house near the wall of the Scais lake dam (1503 m). Our view opens to the beautiful green basin occupied by the lake waters on whose surface Cima Soliva is reflected. To our right south the Vedello Valley and east left of Cima Soliva, the entrance to Val di Caronno partially hidden by the hill we must climb. We walk a few meters and here is a short tunnel, perhaps built specifically for avalanches, since in particularly snowy seasons the trail flanking the right orographic side of the lake is invaded by remains of numerous landslides. The same tunnel might be covered by "vendü" as in 2009. In that case trunks and branches made the normally easy trail difficult to reach the Scais Houses (1547 m
