Description: Some peaks framing the basin of Cortina d'Ampezzo share a common feature: their rocky structure. They are all ancient coral barriers or lava and tuff banks, hence north slopes are long gentle gradients, while south slopes drop with vertical walls. Thanks to this morphology, they offer beautiful snowshoeing along very panoramic itineraries to the summits. Among them Nuvolau, Monte Formin and Corvo Alto also called Monte Mondeval. Corvo Alto is the main peak delimiting south the Mondeval plateau enclosed between Monte Pelmo and Monte Formin. It is a wide high plain of great geological and historical interest, linked to the discovery of a prehistoric archaeological site. In 1985, under a large erratic boulder, a Mesolithic man's burial with full funerary kit was found, dating back about 8000 years. In winter the plateau becomes highly evocative landscape, far from the ski carousels of the 'Pearl of the Dolomites', inviting the most adventurous snowshoers to its immaculate summit, surrounded by vast virgin snow expanses, immersed in silence and pristine Dolomite beauty. Finally in the evening the extraordinary Dolomite sunset show.
