Description: Two-day hike on Monte Pelmo. Summit and loop, passing through Cengia di Ball and overnight at Rifugio Venezia.
It dates back to September 19, 1857, the first 'alpine' ascent in the Dolomites by John Ball who reached the inviolate 3,168-meter summit of Pelmo, through what later became 'the John Ball ledge'. Ball described the Dolomites in his diary notes as follows: 'In no other part of the Alps do such high peaks rise so abruptly and with so little appearance of connection between them. In no other part are there such marked contrasts offered by the difference in geological structure as those that strike the traveler here'.
