Description:
01-03-2022: Route 11 km Elevation gain 935 m
Arriving in Val Calamento past the hotel and namesake chapel, there is a large parking lot (1270 m), also used for timber loading. From the parking lot, take trail 398 entering a beautiful fir forest, a wooden bridge crosses a stream and leads to the trail starting from Chiesetta di Calamento. Continue on the steep trail, pass the forest road, re-enter the woods until emerging in the pasture of Malga Cere (1713 m), located on the southern slope of Monte Setole and - surprise! - has a nice agriturismo open even in winter on weekdays and holidays. The Malga has also become a support point for the Ippovia del Trentino Orientale and a building has been equipped for horse shelter. From Malga Cere upwards there is no real trail (beware not to follow 389 which leads to Val Maddalena!) but an evident track leading to another splendid and rustic malga, Malga Valpiana (1846 m., about two hours from start), in a sunny position overlooking the valley (but closed in winter). Alternatively, one can reach it following the forest road but with longer times. Past the malga, continue ascending the upper meadows following an evident track (not numbered on maps) that climbs under the grassy ridge separating Val Calamento from Val Campelle, encounter a wooden cross, proceed ascending the grassy ridge of Monte Setole and with free path tackle the steep south slope. Overcoming the hard final stretch here we are finally on the flat summit of Setole (2215 m., about one hour from Malga Valpiana). Now the panorama has further expanded northwest with some famous peaks prominently like Pala del Becco and Cima delle Buse. Below us the solitary Val Montalon. Continued following downhill the trail from Setole to the pastures of Malga Cere. From Malga Cere to parking retraced the ascent trail.
