Description: In this contribution, we will learn more about the Sherpa people who live in the heart of the Nepalese Himalayas, under mighty eight-thousanders like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and others. Here and elsewhere in the world, Sherpas are known primarily for their irreplaceable role in conquering the world's highest peaks. We know much less about the area where they live, how they make a living, where they come from, what their beliefs are, and how their lives have changed in recent decades as tourist visits to their country rapidly increase. We will get at least partial answers to these questions in a conversation with alpinist Bojan Pollak, who has been visiting Sherpas for many years and also actively participates in the Slovenian Mountaineering School in Nepal. The school, established 28 years ago at the initiative of Aleš Kunaver, is the only such school in Nepal and represents the friendship between Sherpas and Slovenes.
