Description: © CLAUDIO MORTINI™ Narni TR in 299 BC was conquered and renamed Narnia, i.e., Nera, by the Romans. In 545-546 during the barbarian invasions, it suffered the sack by Totila's hordes, in 399 it was the seat of a Lombard gastald, and in 726 it became domain of the Church. City of ancient foundation finds its defined identity as a colony and then municipality in Roman era along the consular Flaminia. It rises on a spur dominating the Nera gorge and the Terni basin, in a site of difficult access due to the steepness of the slopes that conditioned its form and urban development. Near the border between Umbria and Lazio, it was a road node of fundamental importance for controlling traffic between Rome and the Adriatic, tying its fortunes to this role for centuries and suffering sieges and destructions for it.
