Fayoum is the largest oasis in Egypt and the closest to the Nile River and Cairo. Lake Qarun present in the region formed about 70,000 years ago, when the Nile flooded the depression that today occupies the current Fayoum region. Currently, the canals connecting it to the river actually feed the lake.
