Description: Piz Popéna rises like an imposing tower east of Passo del Cristallo. The rarely frequented ascent takes place in a severe environment, with rare tracks and some stone cairns, on solid rock in some sections and broken or friable in others, often on scree, with difficulties around grade II. Thus challenging terrain recommended only to hikers with mountaineering experience accustomed to little-frequented and wild Dolomite routes, on a peak with only a few ascents per year. From Malga Misurina follow trail no. 224/222 to the ruins of the former Rif. Popena, from here descend into Val Popena Alta then climb aiming at the evident scree cone from the wall. Climb it until, turning left, ascend the ledge crossing the wall, from here onwards follow carefully the few cairns marking the route to the summit.
