Description: The old town of Prekovršac is located in Sisak-Moslavina County in the municipality of Donji Kukuruzari, 8 km southwest of Hrvatska Kostajnica. The old town of Prekovršac is now in ruins, but still testifies to its former beauty. From the existing ruins, it is visible that the fortress, built of soft yellow stone blocks of various sizes, had three cylindrical towers. It was built around 1470 by Croatian princes Zrinski as an important part of the European rampart against the Ottoman invasion. The Prekovršac fortress was the guardian of the road over Zrinska Gora between Zrin and Gvozdansko and the Pokupje-Sava regions as a result of the activities of Nikola III. Zrinski. After the fall of Kostajnica in 1556, the surroundings of the town were devastated and abandoned due to the Turkish scorched earth tactics to such an extent that supplying the garrison was completely impossible, despite the multi-year efforts of the Croatian Sabor to supply food from Varaždin. In 1558, Ivan Lenković writes in his report on the fortresses in the Croatian borderland that the Zrinskis themselves destroyed the fortress so that the Turks could not use it for further conquests.
