The documents are silent about the origin and fate of this fortress, so one can only rely on assumptions. The builders of this castle may have been the count Udalschalk proven here in the 11th century or the lords of Mallentein, an assumption that has much to commend it. Ultimately, the counts of Heunburg or the Ortenburg counts could also come into question.
