Description: Thernberg is one of the oldest hill castles in Lower Austria. Already in 1108 an 'Emerich de Terrenberch' is mentioned. A document from the Reichersberg monastery mentions a Rapoto von Thernberg in 1150. In 1227, the castle first appears with Dietmar and Ulrich von Thernberg. The Thernbergers were ministeriales of the Formbach counts and related to the lords of Pitten. Originally, the castle belonged to them as free allod. In 1310, the brothers Ulrich and Nikolaus von Thernberg sold their lordship to Duke Friedrich, making it a state castle. Subsequently, it was pledged several times.
