Description: © CLAUDIO MORTINI™ Sellano PG is a hilltop castle rising at 640 m a.s.l., in a dominant position over the Vigi river valley, tributary of the Nera. Some scattered finds suggest occupation in pre-Roman (castelliere di Santa Maria del Monte) and Roman times. In the early Middle Ages the territory was part of the jurisdiction of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, then saw the growth of some feudal families (including the Alviano) and finally became a free commune. Due to its position, Sellano and the nearby castles were coveted by the municipality of Spoleto which contested possession first with the Imperial Curia and then with the neighboring centers (in particular Foligno, Trevi, Mevale, Camerino).
