Description: © CLAUDIO MORTINI ❀ Monte Epomeo is the highest peak of the island of Ischia and reaches 789 meters. Various derivations have been given to its name, but the most reliable are: Epopon or Epopos which means 'I look', 'I watch' (D'Aloysio and Verlicchi); others (Baldino) derive the name Epomeo from the Greek Epopeus (in Latin Epomeus) 'look around'. Ziccardi also refers to another etymology: Epopon, that is 'mountain that overlooks all the springs'. For Lamartine, Epomeo was «a paradisiacal place where the soul rises to God and from which the blessed eye expands in an enchanting and wonderful panorama that no pen can reproduce, where one breathes the air of another world».
