Description: Szigliget Castle rising on Szent György Hill is one of the most significant castle ruins in the Balaton Uplands. It played a key role in the fight against the Turks. Against the rapidly advancing Turkish conquerors in the Balaton area, Szigliget also became part of the border fortress system. During the ownership of the Lengyel noble family, its most famous captain, Bálint Magyar, commanded it. Like so many medieval castles on mountain peaks, Szigliget's fate was sealed by a lightning strike that exploded the gunpowder stored in one of the towers, and the castle buildings burned down in the fire.
