Description:
Today we visit Cerro Punta located in the Cordillera Central between the municipalities of Ponce and Jayuya, at an altitude of 1,338 meters (4390 feet) above sea level, it is the highest point in Puerto Rico. Also known as Cerro la Puntita or the Dwarf Alp. The average temperature is 65F and with winds the thermal sensation is below freezing during the winter months. The mountain is located immediately north of the state road PR-143, at coordinates 18.172458°, -66.591839°. On clear days, which was not our case, you can observe almost the entire island of Puerto Rico including San Juan which is 75 miles away. There is an observation platform at the summit itself. The road leading to the top of the hill branches off from PR-143, is in poor condition, has a very steep incline, no safety railings, is narrow and is very dangerous in rainy weather. A 4X4 vehicle or walking to the top is recommended. Parking at the top is limited. There is parking next to PR-143 for those who wish to walk. We will return in the future on a clear day to enjoy its impressive views. Ciao.
