The Hillary Step was always a rocky spur just below the summit, but today, it's just a slope, say climbers who have recently returned from the mountain. In fact, climbers returning from the summit in recent years have stated that what was once a nearly vertical 12-meter rock wall is now a gradual snowy slope, making the final ascent faster and easier.
