The brown bear with the scientific name Ursus arctos is the king of our forests and one of the most powerful animal species that can be encountered in the Slovenian hills and vast Kočevje forests. It is recognized by its stocky body covered with thick brown fur, strong legs with large claws, and the characteristic hump on the shoulders formed by powerful muscles of the front limbs. Although it appears somewhat clumsy at first glance, the bear is an exceptional runner, agile climber, and good swimmer who generally avoids direct encounters with humans in nature.
In their natural habitat, bears are pronounced loners who need extensive and quiet forest areas for survival. Their diet is extremely varied as they are omnivores; the majority of their food consists of plant fruits, roots, and insects, only rarely do they hunt prey. They are extremely intelligent beings with an extraordinarily developed sense of smell that allows them to detect food or potential danger over long distances. They spend the winter in dens in a state of dormancy, and in spring they set out again to explore their vast territories.
Its presence in our environment is a symbol of pristine nature and high biodiversity that Slovenia possesses. Observing this furry giant inspires respect for the wilderness and reminds us of the importance of coexistence between humans and nature in our shared mountain world. An encounter with it, whether in the wild or in the safe shelter of serviced farms, is always an unforgettable moment that testifies to the magnificence of the animal kingdom in our country.
