Alpine orchid (Chamorchis alpina)
Description:
Green wolf's tongue and alpine cepetuljka - similarity:
Differentiating cuckoo orchids some call orchids (Orchidaceae) can be quite uncertain, solely by habitus or general appearance.
Green wolf's tongue and alpine cepetuljka we will easily confuse only by height of growth and color of the "helmet", that is 5 perianth leaves that "cover" the flower, while the 6th perianth leaf (the lower one of 3 from the inner circle) is significantly different – named honey lip. The helmet color is in both species very variable and similar from greenish, yellowish to reddish.
We can easily distinguish them by the following characteristics:
Green wolf's tongue - Coeloglossum viride (L.) Hartm.
The honey lip is strap-shaped – equally wide at the base as at the tip. At the tip it is split into 3 lobes, with the middle lobe distinctly smaller than the lateral ones, sometimes almost atrophied so we barely notice it, thus the honey lip can appear two-pronged (like a snake's tongue). In color it can be yellow to greenish-reddish.
The stem is smooth round and leafy at least with one (1) cauline leaf, otherwise there can be 3-6.
Leaves are flat lanceolate-ovate, at the tip ± pointed and clasping the stem like scissors. Basal ones are somewhat larger than the upper ones.
Alpine cepetuljka - Chamorchis alpina (L.) Rich.
The honey lip is wedge-shaped narrowed toward the top. At the base it is wider than at the top. Whole! – undivided with a pointed or rounded tip. Initially yellow but quickly wilts and browns.
The stem is ribbed and LEAFLESS!
Leaves are basal only, linear approximately as long as the stem.
I should mention only that recently (currently) green wolf's tongue has been reassigned from the genus Coeloglossum to the genus Dactylorhiza, so you would not be confused if in the latest literature, or literature still being prepared, you find the species Dactylorhiza viridis (L.) R. M. Bateman, Pridgeon & M. W. Chase. Perhaps even without citing the synonym Coeloglossum viride. In both cases it refers in Slovenian to green wolf's tongue.
I should add that for orchids it is almost essential to depict the honey lip as well, since many can be distinguished only by this "criterion".
And one more thing. All Slovenian cuckoo orchids – orchids are THREATENED and thus protected plants. However, tireless nature enthusiasts will apparently continue thinning their numbers by picking flowers. For example, the beautiful lady's slipper on Zelenica may soon disappear, just like the scarlet cuckoo orchid on the Slovenian coast. And some others elsewhere too.

"adored" photographs that do not convey the essence. From this perspective, the picture could calmly also be the green frog orchid - Coeloglossum viride. Because from the picture it is not possible to discern any characteristic detail. The leafiness of the stem, the shape of the leaves, not to mention the shape of the honey lip. Because the green frog orchid is scattered throughout Slovenia with the exception of Suha krajina, Pohorje and the Pannonian plain. While the Alpine dwarf orchid is significantly less common, distributed only in the northern part of the Julian Alps, around Stol, around Grintavec-Kališče ridge and around Peca.

I think this is my admittedly poor picture taken on Veliki Špičje. I photographed the green frog orchid the year before last on the botanical path under Črna prst. I would attach this picture next to it, but it doesn't work, so that the obvious difference can be seen.

Then it will almost certainly be the green frog orchid. Because the dwarf orchid can be found with a bit of luck in the Julian Alps +- in the arc Mangrt - Mojstrovka - Razor. It thrives at an altitude of 2000 m to 2700 m, while the green frog orchid has a lower but larger range 700-2500 m

Mr. velkavrh or someone else. I did not intend to publish on the internet, but this time I will make an exception and attach to your portal a photo comparison between the alpine dwarf orchid and the green frog orchid for illustration and orientation in the future. ONLY! Because I am a gray-haired computer dunce, and not a very great friend of the computer at all, especially the internet, I ask you for instructions "dunce-style" which buttons I have to click to attach the photo to you. or is the procedure even more complicated?

In this section it is not possible to add pictures, but you can add pictures in the section at the bottom link. http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=10001&id=2824 Upon publication, a button (green box) "Pictures" appears on the right side, which you click and a new window opens, where you then select pictures from your computer that you want to publish. Tadej Thank you very much. But the patient is still seriously ill, because the operation did not succeed. I used the provided link but: I DO NOT FIND the green button on the right side "pictures". I have available only: above green buttons "remove ads", profile", private messages","my descriptions" and "instructions" A row below blue buttons: "forum","new topic", "search", "settings", and blue menu on the left side, which also doesn't lead me anywhere. And also in the "instructions tab" there are mentioned buttons "pictures" and "upload pictures" in the section "current conditions". But these buttons simply are not there. Is a special registration required for using this function for uploading pictures? Or special permission?

First it is necessary to write the text, publish it, then the mentioned box appears. The box appears on the right side of the message. Regards, Tadej

Photograph of the alpine dwarf orchid and the green frog orchid. The alpine dwarf orchid is certainly harder to find than the green frog orchid. The reason is in its smallness, as it usually does not reach a height of 10 cm. For searching this interesting wild orchid, it is best to head to some windswept ridge, where there is a mixture of grass and fine rubble. Below 2000m we will not find it. It is best to inspect the terrain on knees, and we will find it. In the Bohinj mountains it is not so rare at all. I found the most on the area of Mišelj vrh, Vogels, Debeli vrh and Veliki špičje. Thank you peter2 for the information about "new" locations of the dwarf orchid for me. To Tadej heartfelt thanks for all the explanations. I managed to send something, where on the portal it will be visible, only you "old cats" can know. regards

I'll try to find it next year at the mentioned sites, perhaps on Mišelj vrh, because I haven't been up there yet.

Not only do I agree with jojoj, but I am 100% sure that the upper picture does not show cepetuljka but green wolf's tongue. With cepetuljka, linear leaves are always visible next to it, taller than the flower stem and usually interfering with flower photography. Also: wolf's tongue can be various colors: green, yellow, red and all intermediate variants.
