Planina Svinja / Saualpe (2079m)

Since I had some time left yesterday after visiting Golica, I decided to also climb to Planina Svinja, whose highest peak is the 2079m high Velika Svinja / Ladinger Spitze.
By car from Wolfsberg via St. Michael to Lading above which there is a marked parking lot. I ascended to the summit via the left path, which led past the Wolfsberger Hütte hut and then along a scenic grassy ridge to the top. This path is completely dry. I descended past the Ladinger Hütte hut and then along the forest road to the car. On this path there are still some patches of snow in the upper part. LP Tadej

I'm interested if in Austria's peaks and huts there are also summit books and stamps like here and how it is with marked paths?? Since I haven't hiked Austrian hills yet, some info would be useful, as I'll slowly head across the border!

Paths are well marked, the only difference is in the color of the mountain signs. On most summits there are stamps and logbooks.

Aha, Tadej, I see you took exactly the same path as me. The path up was well marked, but back to Ladinger Hutte I wouldn't quite say so. If there weren't some locals I might have gone astray.

klavdipo, I can only say to you that abroad (speaking more of Italy and France) the attitude in huts and guests' behavior is completely incomparable to Slovenian ones. In a better sense. As for Austria, I think marking is something like ours, Italy (except South Tyrol) somewhat worse, France is rather bad in that regard...

How beautifully the atmosphere of vast plateaus and endless peace is evoked. Saved the tour to Luna's drawer.

Up there it's really wilderness like in some Wild West prairie or the Scottish Highlands. Who would expect that in Austria!

Do you have any times for the ascent?

In 2008 I did a loop from Geissel hutte to Ladinger Spitz and back. Altogether moderate hiking with stops for tea, beer a bit over 6 hours. Total about 15 km and 700 m elevation.
Parked a bit higher than Geisselhute. From parking to Offnerhutte approx 1 hour then to Wolfsberger Hutte another 40 min. From there to Ladinger Spitz summit another 1:40 so total 3:20. From summit back via Sandkogl and Ladinger Alma about 3 hours. I'll upload GPS track if helpful.

MajaO: I see you know geology better than I do because you nicely found everything yourself and use terms completely foreign to me. Bojan_A also knows a lot about geology as it's his hobby and he even wrote about gneiss on his blog.

I encountered gneiss myself in the High Tauern on Ankogel and Säuleck. Large stone blocks piled on each other, it's really tricky to walk on because you don't know if one won't shift under your feet and you'll fall.

There are no scree fields in our sense, just 'boulder fields'! It all looks like being on another planet! mežikanje

It was similar in Stelvio National Park (South Tyrol) only perhaps there it's some other rock (more brownish) otherwise similar. Those are Rhaetian Alps, if anyone knows what rocks are there.

On Saturday the sun was quite inviting out of the fog. We did a loop: Lading(P) - Wolfsberger huette - Ladinger spitz - Ladinger huette - Lading (P). We spent five hours on the whole path. The path is suitable for those with less fitness, since there is no trace of any steep ascents. It's also a good goal for later years, I took a good look at the terrain.

Yesterday I was on Velika Svinja. Conditions were ideal. Clear sky. Fresh wind. Above Giesslhutte hut there is a large parking lot where I parked, then first along the marked path to Offnerhutte. Then I just went across extensive mountain pastures, between herds of cows and across streams following the highest point on the horizon and stepped onto the summit. I descended first along the marked path, then I followed the starting point which I kept seeing below me. I didn't even get to Wolfsberg hutte, because it seemed off the path to me and I preferred to descend directly pathless to the starting point. In short, a very nice, not too strenuous ascent. And I found some mushrooms along the way nasmeh nasmeh nasmeh nasmeh

22.3 on Svinja. Parking dry. With altitude more and more transformed snow, which also early doesn't hold human weight. For the last 300m elevation gain recommend using snowshoes.

Sandkogel and Ladinger Spitz

On the ridge there is still quite some snow, which is melting fast and if not much falls these days, the range will soon be dry. Me and princess went first to Sandkogel, from there to Ladinger Spitz and descended from it past Wolfsberger huette. The whole dear day we didn't meet anyone, only two grouse crossed our path right below Sandkogel.
Attention! Wolves roam on Svinja, so caution is not superfluous. Warning signs about them are also along the paths leading to huts and peaks.

On Saturday 8.2. from Klippitztorl pass towards Forstalpe summit. Part of the path without snow, partly windblown and towards the summit icy. In the forest (we returned via loop path) up to 40 cm snow and trodden.

Today we conquered five peaks. Start at Klippitztorl saddle-1644m. Then along marked path to Geirkogel-1917m, continuation to Getrusk-2044m. In between also summit-Forstalpe-2034m and summit marked only with marker stone for peaks -Kienberg-2050m. As the highlight of the tour at the end after four and a half hours of walking to Ladiger Spitz-2079m (Velika Svinja). Unfortunately bad weather - fog and hurricane wind. Gloves and winter hat needed and almost jacket. On the way back the fog cleared. Otherwise the path is well marked, easy-offers us beautiful rock sculptures. On the way back we avoided the first and second peak. The path is also marked.
Saddle - start.1
Towards the first summit.2
One walks along the pastures - along the fence.3
First summit - Geirkogel - 1917 m.4
We were not alone at the summit. This is how they hid with the edeklice from the hurricane wind.5
Well marked. The path is well trodden.6
This is actually panoramic path - no. 308. Leads to the main summit - Velika Svinja. This is the summit of Forstalpe - 2034 m.7
Second summit - Getrusk - 2044 m. Here one has to climb a bit. The path goes somewhat up, somewhat down.8
We climb up to it.9
Lovers also come up here.10
Towards the third summit.11
12
The path here is quite long. To here and back with stops we spent about eight hours.13
On the way back we only then see the cattle on pasture.14
And these rocks have now shown themselves.15
16
On the way back we avoid the first two summits along this nice little path.17

Some more of my photos from yesterday's windy excursion on Svinja plateau (other names are also Planina Svinja, Svinečka planina, Svinja planina, Svinjska planina and in German Saualpe, maybe there's another name).

Best, Tadej

Today with Romana we wanted to hike this range, but we only made it to the first summit and a few meters further, wind and fog wanted their toll. We turned back and along the lower path, in the shelter of trees back to the ridge, even now we didn't reach the summit, wind and fog turned us back.

To Ladinger Spitz from the west side is a really nice walk. To Steinerhütte even in winter is mostly reachable by car, then along the path to the ridge a bit over 2000 m and along the ridge to the summit. Even in snow very easy but scenic winter walk.
