On Sunday 1.6.2008 I visited Biokovo. Biokovo is a nature park that rises steeply above Makarska. The highest peak is Sveti Jure (1762m), to which a small stone church is dedicated, which gave the peak its name. Next to the church there are also transmitters on the top that spoil the peak and surroundings. Since you can drive very high by car I needed only less than half an hour of walking to the top. On the return I climbed also to the slightly lower but much nicer peak Vošac, from which a very nice view opens to the valley towards Makarska. Entrance fee to the park is 30kn per person and is collected at the beginning of the steep mountain road. Upon entering the park they warned me that there are many blue lizards on Biokovo. LP Tadej

Since I might visit Biokovo in summer too, your data will come in handy. I'm interested in where exactly the road to Biokovo branches off (is it all asphalted) and if besides the mentioned one there is any other hut and if one can overnight there. Besides the mentioned peaks I'd like to visit sv. Ilija and V. Troglav. Can one get some map or chart of Biokovo down there? Thanks for info and LP. Miha.

After Makarska towards Dubrovnik, the road to Vrgorac and Biokovo park branches off to the left. After a few kilometers, the road to Biokovo branches sharply to the left (marked). Right at the start of this road, the entrance fee is collected. At the park entrance, as I've heard, it's possible to buy a hiking map, but I think it's not needed as you get a brochure with drawn trails (no contours). The road is fully asphalted (23km), but very narrow. There are several huts; on Sunday only farm tourism at sv. Ilija was open. Sv. Ilija by the road, Veliki Troglav pathless.

During vacation I also visited Biokovo - did part of Biokovo partisan trail (KT 9 - KT13). It's interesting on this path that there are no stamps on KT but only KT mark. In the logbook need to stick KT photo. LP

Hi, how much time do you need to Vošac if walking from Makarska or the little longer variant from 0,30 min? Where to leave the car? Is the path well marked? Thanks, LP

We left the car a bit above the town, if I'm not mistaken before a shop. To Vošac (1,425 m), or to the mountain hut on the summit, took us cca. 4 hours. I recommend going as early as possible from bed to avoid the sun. Views from the top are fantastic. lp

Are there marked paths to Sv. Jure summit and where do markings start? There where you pay? lp

To all hikers from Slovenia who want to see Biokovo a bit differently, on foot and not by car, also partly through pathless wild world above Makarska, outside marked trails, I recommend contact at PD Biokovo for possible guiding and organizing a tour with one or more overnights. A bit more about my view of a two-day tour on one of the ridge path stages in pictures and comments at the link below. For all those hikers who want to repeat it. This time in my mother tongue. Why, will be clear from the intro text and comments in the album. https://picasaweb.google.com/113805105178377351223/BiokovoSvetiJure1762MIVosac1422M1305201503

If you enter the park from the other side (road Makarska - Kozica) you don't pay entrance fee, because they don't collect it there. But it's true that there are a few km of not the best gravel, not recommended for some lower car. Well, focus caravan went on the road without major problems. We discovered this route last year more by chance, this year I don't know in what condition it is.

Makarska - Sv.Jure (1762 m) / by bike Sv.Jure is the highest peak of Biokovo and apparently the third highest in Croatia, and up from the sea there is also a quite nice asphalt road, true quite steep, but very scenic, nicely laid out and worth seeing. From Makarska to the entrance of nature park Biokovo is about 6 km, from the entrance "gate" where entrance fee is paid (per person) another 23 km to the top. Besides hiking descriptions on this side, I was encouraged to visit the mountain also by a heartfelt description of some recreational cyclist: http://bilbobisagin.blogspot.si/2010/08/sveti-jure-biokovo.html If you tackle the ascent in summer, early morning hour is recommended as early as possible when it's not hot yet, for the whole way from sea to top - if you are in good condition, you need 3 to 3.5 hours, the road surface is suitable for both mountain and road bike. Of course you can't avoid cars on the locally narrow road, and you need to be especially careful of them on the descent.

At the gate before entering the park there's a sign in Croatian and English saying that all hikers with a card and paid annual membership can get a discount on entry. Why they don't give it to Slovenian hikers, I don't know. I wrote to their info email for fun. I'll report if anything interesting comes back Best regards
