Congratulations for the ascent on the mountain which I have also been looking at with pleasure for a long time. I would join you if you took me with you. I hope the day will come when I set off towards that mountain. Nice regards and good luck!

Hi Janez! Now I am also "up there" again thanks to your pics. I felt the same a few years ago and waited in queue for "green light" as we say at such a rush of people. Good luck and many more such days, of course with green wave in "driver's" way.

Thanks to both. @otiv, I'll follow you too, when I can relive the ascents thanks to others. @viharnik, yeah garages are really nice, especially for sleeping . Anyway, you also did a very nice tour. Congrats! Best regards and safe steps from under the beautiful Golte, Janez

ugn... yeah the pics are nice but you've processed them electronically too much so some are far from reality! Really a shame...

I'm interested if rope protection is really necessary for this mountain and how it works? Can it be done without? Because I got info that there's nothing special... except crowds...

For tourists protection is mandatory, because on the ridge they visibly shake in their pants. For all others as desired. Trouble arises at Glocknerscharte, where there's half a meter space - left Tyrol, right Carinthia - and there ropes of all colors tangle and guides yell "grüne Seil, rote Seil achtung!" ... so really don't know how. Maybe best protection on return only at descent through the notch (few steps) and transition from ridge to glacier (black ice), when crampons scrape on granite ...

Thanks, it seemed to me that because of all these "tourist" ropes problems arise... Ah, I don't have problems with vertigo hehe, I would manage... tnx

Hello This year at the beginning of July we would do the ascent to Grossglockner and I'm interested in something regarding the panoramic road. On the website I saw that at night they don't let you onto this road. Did I misunderstand or is it true? Does it apply only to buses? http://www.grossglockner.at/en/service/ it's visible on this link. thanks for the answer

No, you can't. It's open as it says, from 5am to 9.30pm, and they close at 8.45pm. There are toll stations there and if you want to get onto this road you have to pay that entrance fee - 32eur. After 9.30 they lower the barriers and you can't enter anymore, so if you want to start early it would be smart to go in the evening and sleep in one of the huts that are inside this "Grossglockner park". We slept in that hut last year and early in the morning there was no car anywhere. http://www.edelweissspitze.at/ Hope it helps you a bit and good luck

I remember that one barrier was always up, so also before 5.00. Anyway, you have the phone contacts listed on the link. Call and ask. If you're worried about those 32 euros, just arrive at the toll station a bit before five. Nothing more than waiting and paying the toll will happen. best d

We went mid-May from Kals-Lücknerhaus to Stüdlhütte, where we slept and next day ascended to the summit. The route was fantastic! Ascent from Kals or Lücknerhaus to Stüdlhütte is normal and takes approx 3h, while from Stüdlhütte to top ca. 4h. You walk on glacier for quite some time. Snow started a bit below the hut. Morning or forenoon it was still nicely frozen, but on descent quite slushy. Pictures and short approach description on M-foto.si Oh, from Maribor we left around 4.15 via Dravograd, ...etc. and arrived at start around 9.00 (of course short stops in between).

On such a mountain conditions are always demanding, glacier and rock, only weather offers various versions.
