That's what I'm talking about urarrr, if you go there you have to consume everything you can, squeeze the wallet a bit and that's it, no one will go there twice. But your price comparison is excellent, if we take my scenario where all I was and yours. As far as I see you didn't even go to Kili, of all sights you only went on one safari and stayed in a hotel with AC. No offense, but safari and hotel you can afford in Vienna too, it would cost 200€, and no need to get jabbed for fever. But true you can now tell your acquaintances you were almost at Kili.

yeah...

what would I say. I was only a little in the hotel. it wasn't a hotel but some complex for tourists.... mostly our taxi driver drove us around...same one after safari too.... wanted to write a bit about costs... I think your number is very high. and it can easily be reduced.... but true it depends where you move and with whom. dinner can cost same as here... in restaurant where guarded with kalashnikovs....you go to local tavern, where you get plates so big you don't know if it's plate or something else but prices theirs.... true we always had a local with us.... so dinner for 4 persons 10 eu....

sorry for spelling...writing from phone and no will to correct...

just wanted to tell you. 5K number is real.... but can be much less too... and I think it doesn't depend so much what you go see but with whom and how....

Kilimanjaro 2011: all together 3700 Eur; acclimatization Mount Kenya 5 days, Kilimanjaro 6 days, safari 3 days with all transfers, food, vaccinations, antimalarials, visas.... They really say that it's more expensive every year. And regarding returning to these places, to Mount Kenya I would go again - for the soul!

I would go to Kilimanjaro again, but via Western Breach - it's much more expensive though (and offered by only few agencies), but you sleep in the crater alone.

This was the travel plan. The price did not include both visas and the mandatory amount for tips and small expenses that the guide has on the way.

Mighty Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro + safari 20 days

• Ascent to the roof of Africa, mighty Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya
• Real safari in the famous Tanzanian national parks
• Let's go hunting with the real Bushmen tribe Tindiga

Departure: December 2010

1st day LJUBLJANA – NAIROBI. Departure from Ljubljana to Munich, from where we fly to the capital of Kenya Nairobi. Upon arrival accommodation in hotel and rest. (plane, H)

2nd day NAIROBI – MT. KENYA. We leave the chaotic Kenyan capital and head north. The road takes us to Mt. Kenya, which at 5199 m is the second highest African peak. Point Lenana at 4985 m is accessible to us and we will climb it. Upon arrival in the national park we take a few-hour acclimatization walk at the foot of the mountain. Just enough to slowly get used to Africa. We overnight in tents. (O, ZKV)

3rd day MT. KENYA/day 1. After breakfast we head to Sirimon gate from where we start the ascent. After a few hours we reach the first camp with an interesting name Old Moses Camp at 3300 m (4 – 5 hours). (O, ZKV)

4th day MT. KENYA/day 2. Today we start earlier, cross valleys, streams, all the time accompanied by unique giant lobelias and senecios. Most of the day we walk through Makinder's valley, constantly the three peaks appear before us. We camp at 4200 m in Shipton camp (7 hours). (O, ZKV)

5th day MT. KENYA/day 3. We get up in the middle of the night and go to Point Lenana at 4985 m (3 – 4 hours), "hiking peak". We are at the top just at sunrise. On a clear day you can even see the mighty Kilimanjaro far in the distance. We descend the other side and spend the last night on the mountain in Chogoria camp (3000 m, 3 - 4 hours). (O, ZKV)

6th day MT. KENYA – NAIROBI. After breakfast we descend to the vehicles and slowly return to Nairobi, accommodate in hotel and relive memories of the ascent. (H, Z)

7th day NAIROBI – ARUSHA. Time to head to Kilimanjaro. We leave Nairobi and via Namanga border crossing enter Tanzania, the land of Africa's highest peak. After border formalities departure to Arusha, accommodation in hotel and rest before safari. (H, Z)

8th day ARUSHA – LAKE MANYARA NP. Time for what Tanzania is also famous for. A real safari in some of the world's most beautiful national parks. Over 4 million wild animals hide in Tanzanian ones and it won't be surprising if we find ourselves in the middle of a herd of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, gnus, giraffes,… spot a lioness with cubs, wake a sleeping leopard on a tree, disturb Nile hippos bathing,… Of course it's nature and much will depend on luck. For the first day we head to Manyara NP, famous for lions and Nile hippos. Of course the location itself on the western edge of the great tectonic rift is a treat. We overnight in tents. (O, ZKV)

9th day NGORONGORO CRATER. We cross the edge of the great rift all the way to the world-famous Ngorongoro crater, which impresses with its wonderful location, blue-green views and huge concentration of animals. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We sleep right on the crater edge and enjoy listening to mother nature all night. (O, ZKV)

10th day NGORONGORO – EYASI LAKE. We leave the crater edge and continue south to Eyasi Lake. It is not famous for wildlife, but for Bushmen. And what could be better than spending a day with them and going hunting. Do you remember the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy"?? If not, we recommend you watch it and we'll make a comparison… (O, ZKV)

11th day EYASI LAKE – TARANGIRE NP – ARUSHA NP. We also visit the baobab-covered Tarangire national park, famous for huge elephant herds and incredible landscape, then slowly head to Arusha national park, which lies below the second highest peak in Tanzania - Mt. Meru 4566 m. It will serve us as acclimatization for Kilimanjaro. (O, ZKV)

12th day ARUSHA NP. After breakfast we head on a real "walking" safari. With an armed ranger, with a bit of luck we will approach giraffes, buffaloes, elephants,… Where else could we acclimatize like this. Return to Arusha and overnight in hotel. (H, Z)

13th day ARUSHA – KILIMANJARO/day 1. We leave Arusha and head to the mighty 5895 m high Kilimanjaro. The name translates to "Small white mountain", but it's not small at all once you stand under it. From cultivated agricultural areas in the lower part, through tropical forest, over alpine meadows and barren lunar landscape we reach "Freedom Peak", as the top of Kilimanjaro is called in the local language. We choose the Machame route, known as the most beautiful of the 5. Along a winding path through rainforest we reach our first camp Machame at 3100 m (5 - 7 hours). (O, ZKV)

14th day KILIMANJARO/day 2. After breakfast we leave the camp, slowly also the rainy forest. Along a rocky ridge we reach Shira plateau. For the first time we see all 3 peaks of Kilimanjaro (Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira). We camp in Shira camp at 3840 m (5 – 7 hours). (O, ZKV)

15th day KILIMANJARO/day 3. We turn east into semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding the lava tower at 4630 m sometimes also called "Shark's tooth". Extremely important acclimatization day. After a short rest at the tooth we descend to Barranco camp (3950 m, 5 – 7 hours), where we overnight. (O, ZKV)

16th day KILIMANJARO/day 4. After spending the night at the great Barranco wall we climb it, cross and reach Heim glacier. Only now do we truly realize how wonderful Kilimanjaro actually is. Then through Karanga valley and we are in Barafu camp at 4600 m (7 – 8 hours). The summit is only 1345 vertical meters away. (O, ZKV)

17th day KILIMANJARO/day 5. Just after midnight we get up and attack the summit. First goal is Stella point at 5745 m, short stop and magnificent sunrise. From here on snow we go to the top, to Uhuru Peak, to "freedom" at 5895 m (7 – 8 hours). After short enjoyment at the top of Africa, and storing the memory that will stay with us for life, we descend to Barafu, pick up gear and continue to Mweka (3100 m, 5 hours). (O, ZKV)

18th day KILIMANJARO/day 6 - ARUSHA. Short walk to Mweka gate, then transfer to Arusha, accommodation in hotel and enjoying well-deserved comfort. Time for celebration and going for well-deserved Kilimanjaro beer. They say if you don't conquer it, you can at least drink it…. (H, Z)

19th day ARUSHA – NAIROBI. After breakfast we return to Kenya, from where we fly via one of the airports back home. (plane)

20th day NAIROBI – LJUBLJANA. Another flight via one of the airports to Munich, and transfer to Ljubljana and our journey ends.

In certain departure dates it can be from Venice, Vienna…, organized bus transfer from Ljubljana.

Price per person in double room: 3290 EUR (listed price)

Hi..

we're also planning something like that sometime...maybe... it was planned this year too, but other priorities...

as I wrote above... prices hold...

the only problem is that you can't agree on exact date. because return ticket for 300-450€ not every day. when it is, you pay it immediately. and that's it. I'm talking about flight Munich Mombasa. there I have acquaintances-working at police-no fear for problems. they take us directly to the border with Tanzania. from there to the top and back a local agency takes us for 1000 per head. When back another week at Diani beach...of course via safari.. and back.... I think it's doable for about 2000€.....

If you decide for SLO agency it's smoother, dates known, everything in short easier with our agencies. Of course it shows a lot on the price...

Oh..
recommended some acclimatization already in Europe if plan to go directly to Kili... Say some winter hut on Grossglockner at 3500 would be ok..

if it doesn't work for us contact me on ZS... I'll pass you numbers from Kenyan buddies... everything can be arranged... they are just people... who have salary 50-60€ per month for 6-day week 10 hours a day.... give him something small, pay food and the guy will be with you 25 hours a day....

the most expensive thing is safari... we gave him 85 or 90 $ per day... transport guiding and full board.. everything in that price. So 3 days safari 270$ = about 200€....

cheers

This price from Agency Oskar is quite a solid price, self-organized would be similar maybe 10-20 % less (so taking agency there), more not.

At the price of safari for 90$ per day all inclusive I can only laugh: official fee (entrance) for Lake Manyara is 45$ per person. Serengeti relieves you of some 120$ per person for 24 hours, Ngorongoro crater had then 200$ entrance for 6 hours. These are official state tariffs and as far as I saw, you can't bypass it just like that, entrance points are like customs.
Fees for parks in Kenya are significantly cheaper.

High altitude acclimatization on Grossglockner not necessary, because it's almost too low. I went a week before Africa on a three-day tour around and to Triglav, and even that to see if my knee holds 2300 m descent in one day.

there. I myself spent half a year in Africa.....behind me about 7 different safaris, Zanzibar, trip through African villages, Nile trip, etc etc etc, and of course ascent to Kilimanjaro.

ascent price is 850usd for Marangu route (620 usd of that price is park entrance fees) and 900usd for Machame, which I did too...here need to know that for everything in Tanzania you pay extra about 10% tips, so another about 90usd tips for guides.

for agency best to deal right in Moshi. go to Kilimanjaro Backpackers Hostel in that town and they direct you to agency. when agreeing for ascent demand at least three or four in group. guide costs about 15-20 usd day, cook about 12 usd day and porter 10 usd day... the more you are the costs divide, minimum 10% per person.... if you're alone in group or just two, you pay much more..!

they provide gear themselves and no extra pay. still nice to have some own stuff. no need to buy mountaineering gear..!!! low boots are totally ok. I had Dakine skater backpack and normal jacket, and nothing missing.

ascent is physically undemanding. ok, maybe because young, and because I hike a bit at home.

Machame route, 6 day, sleeping in tents:
- first day hike 4 hours, ascent 1200m, overnight at 3033m
- second day hike 4 hours, ascent 800m, overnight at 3837m
- third day hike 6 hours (I needed less than 5 hours, tourists 8 to 10 hours), ascent to 4637m (acclimatization), overnight at 3976m
- fourth day hike 6 hours to base camp at 4673m
- fifth day at 0:00 start to summit, about 7 hours...I needed 5 hours. last hour of ascent altitude got me. dizziness, short steps, even vomited once...follows descent to base camp, about 2 hours. rest. during day moves to camp 3800m high
- sixth day descent to base

I on fifth day after summit rested only one hour in base camp, then descended direct to base.. hiked about 7-8 hours. actually with guide we ran the last part of path.

7-day ascent on fourth day ascends to 4033m high and sleeps another night there, to base camp then fifth day...so one more day for acclimatization. need to know that by my estimate for about 80% or more tourists this is first ascent to any mountain in life at all! yes, for first ascent they chose almost 6.000m high peak! and buy gear for few 1000 eur...just Asolo boots for 600 eur, etc...

also need to know that these cheap ascent variants are a bit more spartan.
if you pay agency 2000usd and more (usually via internet or before trip) you get:
- toilet in private tent
- big tent with tables and chairs for eating
- pay extra for every rented piece of gear (about 100 usd for boots, 100usd for sleeping bag, etc)
if you pay in Moshi direct one of agencies:
- toilet public in small huts, outhouse
- dining room is rock in front of your tent
- gear for rent free (0 usd!)

then also about safaris...also can pay on spot...150usd day. so lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, for 4 days, 600usd. cheaper not possible..! in these prices 50 usd entrance for each of these parks, for Ngorongoro extra for car 100usd. when booking be at least three...

Zanzibar...very nice accommodation is Flamingo Hotel right in center...12 usd per person with breakfast. clean, friendly, etc...
for bungalows on beaches pay from 40 usd up (for 2) via net, on location itself can find for 5-10 usd per person...!

Hello,
with two friends we're planning a hike to Kilimanjaro next summer.
Has anyone gone there recently and could have info on what the approximate prices are for the whole trip for say 7-9 days, if you hire some cheaper agency down there? I'm asking because down there prices are rising sharply, most info on forums is probably already outdated.

Thanks for help and best regards

Kilimanjaro, highest free-standing mountain in the world. Sounds like something unconquerable, but it was at the same time one of my easiest and hardest mountains. At height 5000+ the head sees a gentle path, the heart would rush to the top, but the body simply can't manage. "Pole pole" is the slogan of walking on Kilimanjaro - slowly, slowly in Swahili! That's also the only real way to truly savor those precious moments, especially the short spectacle of sunrise on top of Kilimanjaro. Some photos attached, more on the Facebook link. I think you don't need a Facebook account to view the photos. We went via Machame route with return to Mweka gate.
