Single socks that are not cotton, shoes that fit the foot well (doesn't matter high/low), trim nails. Never any problems.

Hello! This also happened to me on longer hikes with nails. On descents my big toes hurt and when I got home both were blue and it took almost a year for them to return to natural color. Then mom asked the pedicurist why this happens and she said possible causes double: 1. nail not fully trimmed (now I trim almost to skin) or 2. second toe longer than big toe. And that's the cause - second toe longer so I just trim nails well sometimes even bleeding and big toe nails blacken less often.
