Hello!

Yesterday after a longer - longer hike I had problems, especially when returning to the valley the front nail banged hard at times.. a few times I made a quick step and had to brake hard nasmeh

When I got to the car I noticed black big toe.. how can I fix this injury or have you had such experiences?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help or opinion.
Stay safe

Probably you have too small hiking boots.

Thanks for opinion
No..boots are fine for me..heel is fixed back front toes right to end of boot.
Already used several times but on last two big hikes when I went down rough rocks and braked a few times it jammed my toe..it went black

Definitely too small boot size or too wide, so foot "slides" forward! Toes shouldn't reach right to the end.

Hmm.. once I did exchange them because too big and heel lifted..then took half size smaller and it was ok. nobody told me it shouldn't be too tight in front.. it's the same Salomon model, meaning probably too wide for me or something, dunno.. and during whole hike maybe 1x or 2x when I step hard it jams toe..otherwise ok

Nail anyway expect it to fall off ,lol

Thanks for help

I know it's recommended for toe-big toe - thimble. Available at pharmacy.

Haha hahahahahahaha. Come on, no thimble. Are you a kid or a granny?! Take the whiskey bottle, take three deep pulls and rip out the nail. It'll happen anyway. Then put ointment on the wound. New nail grows in one month. Meanwhile change boots... I did that myself three times. Fourth time I bought one size bigger...mežikanje

Wow, Avguštin!!!! In how much time does a new nail grow on the foot????
dkranjc, put cold compresses on the toe, if it starts throbbing, need to make a hole for blood under nail to escape. Otherwise for such problems general clinics are available too. I know the problem well, not bullshitting just like that in three days. Good luck.

The nail on the big toe has fallen off several times for me too. Since for downhill I lace the boot at the instep a bit tighter so the foot can't slide forward when going down, the problem doesn't appear anymore and in the same boots. I let the nail fall off itself and new one grows nicely underneath. Usually collected fluid under nail drained itself without piercing nail.

Valerija 112 and margu50 - definitely the most logical explanation or comment and that's what I'll do, as my friend advised.
The body does its own thing over time and don't force it into something that's not good for it. But definitely, margu50, I will follow your advice to tighten the shoe more at the heel when going downhill, which I didn't do till now and obviously that might be the mistake.

Thanks also to you, jusavgustin, for your suggestion but I won't do it, not that the person is a sissy or anything, but even tough guys cry more at the end than girls - gold and basic rule! zavijanje z očmi

Already had such cases, no need to worry, just trim nails before every trip.

Trimmed nails, big enough boots, double socks, downhill tighter
boots so foot doesn't push forward.....I put some foam in front before toes...nasmeh

Also my opinion as I'm an expert on this nasmeh already twice changed the nail on the big toe. Long story short: for long descents you need very high boots (for ascents low shoes are OK). Why high? So that you can tightly lace the ankle and heel, no banging on toes. Big toe needs space in front! Double socks are nonsense, helps nothing, not even for blisters. So I recommend buying new high boots or wearing a thinner sock so toes have more space. Nail healing approx. 1 year. Regards

Regarding shoe size it's the same as with running shoes: length space for toe (push foot to front end and at heel space for toe/index finger). Watch front width: toes need enough space. And that's it. No need to buy 2 sizes larger shoes. No need for double or thick socks, boots insulated enough against cold. Socks preferably thin from modern breathable materials. Cotton not good cuz it holds moisture. Blisters prevent by keeping socks as dry as possible. During trip recommend changing them. Regards

Just a remark: even with low shoes my toe has never banged, and I've walked lots. But I agree, high boots are recommended nasmeh

I wouldn't agree about double socks and blisters. This year I had more problems with blisters because I did quite a few kilometers and really tested all possible variants. Even on shorter distances like just 10-15 km in the hills, the difference with socks is noticeable. For now to avoid blisters I swear by double socks, outer ones Thorlo's, inner thin - liner. For distances longer than 25 km, I stick kinesio tape on the soles, so there's really no slipping on the skin. Some tests say kinesio tape isn't the best, but it's currently the only thing that doesn't peel off for me. In the USA they use duct tape for that, but the one you buy here isn't sticky enough and peels off quickly.

As for toenails I don't have any major problems. Just some minor ones when I accidentally kick a rock.
It seems to me problems arise more depending on how you lace your shoes and how you step. I practically almost never step on the heel so my foot doesn't slam forward and consequently no toenail injuries.

I've tried high and low shoes. If they were "the right ones", no problems with either. Double socks didn't work for me at all. Maybe I didn't use the right ones.zmeden
Important that already in the store you have no doubts when you put them on. And I always lace them loosely upwards if normal path, but tightly in wall, on ridge or downhill.
Mandatory to test them in store on the incline that specialized stores have.
And that "toe from behind" is a good test for size.
