Celovška špica and Svačica

I repeated the path hiked last November because I liked it. From Ljubelj along the border to the hut at Zelenica and onwards upper towards Stol. Then pathless to Celovška špica. Towards the summit you need to scramble a bit, so caution is advised. Cairns help and if you spot them all no major problems. I descended via the lower path to Šija and towards the hut at Završnica spring. From there to Zelenica, then to Ljubelj. In the morning the scree was wet from yesterday's rain so I was soaked to the waist. Quite a few people, especially at both huts.

Seems like I'm the only one going to Celovška špica??. To me it seems super. Today except for moments of cold wind, super. Nice sunny weather, autumn colors, great views, two chamois triggered some rocks at me. Few hikers, only around the hut at Zelenica as always lively.

Our small team, Barbara, Matej, Metod and I went today to Celovška špica, since those 3 haven't been yet. Before that we went climbing from Trat-e to Stol. On Stol it was blowing hard, so at the hut we quickly ate something and through scree towards Celovška špica. Down past Celovska hut. Nice loop we made.
Weather, views, company all super.

With my finger on the map I was looking for what the next goal would be... Somewhere into the high mountains, but not too high, because I don't want to carry snow gear, somewhere I haven't been, and with close access so I can sleep until normal time in the morning, maybe some easy scrambling, but nothing more.. Celovška špica? So I decided and went to check it out.

For starting point I choose Tinčkova hut, because I haven't been there either and with satisfaction I find that the road is impeccably arranged and accessible to everyone (old posts warn about the then poor condition). Above and along the path there are plenty of parking lots, but since I arrived last everything was full, so I barely squeezed in somewhere.

On the map there's a drawn path, but I soon lose it and then go a bit on my own upwards through the forest. Since the forest is nicely passable I don't even miss it, in the upper part we meet again. Soon the views start opening and when I join the marked path from Zelenica/Završnica I'm quickly at the foot. There are still patches of snow here and there, but in very limited extent.

First up the scree and at the saddle quickly peek into Austria, then upwards. The path isn't hard, but full of scree and just steep enough to require some caution. Just as I gain some height the cord with which I had the phone tied to the backpack snaps from the blue and it flies down somewhere into the rubble, without even seeing exactly where. Damn. I curse the phone and everything to hell, then still cautiously go down and after about 15 minutes triumphantly find it about 20 m lower completely undamaged, not even a scratch (for info: CrossCall Trekker, supposed to be impact resistant, well, empirically verified, it is). Because of all the maneuvering I no longer see the path and go (again) a bit on my own towards the summit, where just below the top I stare blankly because I can't go further. In front of my nose vertical rock, left too exposed for my taste... then finally stick my nose over some notch to the Austrian side and find the continuation. Just below the summit (I admit, I admit) I pull myself up the last meters along the lightning rod and triumphantly take the summit. Actually both, Slovenian and Austrian, just a couple meters apart. The logbook is in such bad condition that entry isn't even possible. With interest I look at the neighboring Krkotnik, but with all the scree I'm not quite sure about the safety of descent into the notch, so I remember all those waiting for me at home and rooting for my safe return and rather leave it for another time or someone else.

On the way back I realize that the path is marked with cairns almost every couple meters (what was I looking at before), so I fix those on the way and add an extra stone to each, then slowly and safely stride back to the valley.

For the whole path I used about 7.30 hours, but GPS truthfully says that of that only about 5.30 hours in motion (up and down), the rest admiring nature, snack and searching for the damn phone on the rocks.
Initial part of the path (view back)1
I quickly lose the path and go a bit my own way uphill through the forest, but it is nice anyway.2
In the upper part I find the path again and the first views begin to open.3

Such snow patches still appear here and there. Suitable for pelting a friend with snowballs or for refreshment if you are hot.5
Down from the marked path and up the scree. The Špica at the top (remains of the cross) is already clearly visible.6
At the saddle, peeking into Austria. Below Celovška koča.7
Quite a lot of scree. Somewhere down there past the bushes my phone fell.8
The summit is already very close.9
And even closer. The last meters require some scrambling.10
At the summit, view towards Krkotnik (nearby peak) and Stol (in the background)11
Through this notch one must go on the path to the summit.12
A view that rewards all the effort. Although it was quite windy, I sat there enjoying the scene.13
The downhill path is routed to be as safe as possible, but caution is still required.14

Again I was on Celovška špica. Started at Ljubelj, past the hut at Zelenica and onwards towards Stol.
From the path to Stol you have to cross nasty scree to the saddle under the Peak.
Further on cairns guide you. Down I went lower to saddle Šija and under Vrtaca to Zelenica.
Nice day, maybe even a bit too hot.
Zelenica as always full.

Yesterday to Celovška špica via Zagon. The path over Zagon is much easier to follow than I remember a few years ago. Before joining the lower path to Stol we enjoy the field of Fuchs grit and wonderful views of Srednja peč and Finžgarjeva skala. The path is steep, yesterday it was really hot. To the notch under Celovška špica we cross past a large boulder and join a nicely visible track. From the notch onwards cairns nicely lead up, caution is not superfluous. Wife jumps to the top, I admire gentians and Zois bellflowers a bit lower. Return along the ascent path.

Wonderful, "hidden" peak is this Celovška špica.

Safe steps,
Ben

Yesterday on a night hike with Aleš.
We start walking around 0.30 in pleasant coolness. Discrete outlines of peaks in clear but dark night accompany us the whole way, so we nicely reach Celovška škrbina and from there through a sea of gentians, along cairns to the peak. Wonderful summit, as Bandzo wrote! tinky, no wonder it's close to your heart!
With the rising sun and no wind we slowly continue over the broken world of Krkotnik, all the way to the saddle where we sit down and let the day happen. I could have stayed there, the views are gorgeous!
After a longer break we descend via the lower path over Šija saddle and only below Vrtača we meet the first hikers heading into the hot day. We don't envy them! At the hut we drink something and when the sun presses, we return through shrubbery to Ljubelj.
Although sleepy and tired, we settle into the car and happily drive home.
Take care!
