On Thursday, 09.04.09, we went to Gotenica Snežnik. We ascended from Gotenica village over Kameni zid, descended to Kočevska Reka. The trail was mostly dry. Weather was sunny and very warm.nasmeh The trail dragged on. No bears encountered, but plenty of roe deer.jezik Lots of primroses too. Some nice picsmežikanje

If bears roam Travniška valley and around Rodica, then they are more or less distributed all over Slovenia. If you don't panic and react naturally at possible encounter like with any other animal, bear won't ask if you're some city slicker sticking out from nature and will take you as part of it.

I was on Goteniški Snežnik about three times, also through those forests around we sometimes roamed quite a bit, but haven't seen a bear yet, they have nice climbing area there, think it's called "Bele skale" or something similar. And of course the famous cave system in Gotenica which I visited, it didn't fascinate me especially, but for those times when it was made it was quite good.

Before forecast wind on Saturday I rather headed south Slovenia to Goteniški Snežnik. Frozen snow on upper path somewhere 10-20cm even to 30cm at spots.
On Goteniški Snežnik been many times summer or autumn now first winter and quite interesting tour. Winter ascent becomes quite adrenaline-filled as lots of bear tracks on path and near summit. Saw quite old ones day or so but also quite fresh. For fresh even thought I scared smaller bear cub with my singing. Think now safer from bears there ..who heard my singing fled to Croatia to Gorski Kotar.
here the path at the pass branches off from the road1
a few days old tracks of a large fox2
completely fresh tracks of a small bear cub3
but the good bear showed up, coming from the side4
turned 90 degrees on the path5
and nicely trampled the path almost to the top for us, I only stepped in his footprints6
again some other transverse tracks... don't know which anymore... there are loads7
A little before the summit, sunny weather and no wind.8
Finally I went first at least somewhere... right below the summit of Goteniški Snežnik.9
Summit of Goteniški Snežnik.10
The only view from the summit.11
I found out that bears often walk on the road, here something smelled and it turned into the forest but soon returned.12

You're good, I stick to crowded places, bear-infested ones I'd rather avoid...

Since you're only interested in the color of my sp.gat, I answer that they remained the same dark blue color.nasmeh

If you were interested in how many pleasures I enjoyed in the last two years when I climbed 53 peaks in the area with high potential for bear encounters, I'd tell you that too. So I'm attaching a map with the 53 highest peaks of this area for all nature lovers who know what immense beauties our little Slovenia has. The numbers mean altitude bands: 2 over 400m, 4 over 800m, and 6 over 1200m. Ah, and also, our paths crossed with the bear twice in two years, at a safe distance of about 80 m. Safe travels in the mountains... and forests nasmeh
Dolenjska area where bears also roam, I skipped other Slo areas this time1

A few hours ago I returned from Goteniški Snežnik. Yes, I admit I'm still completely under the impression of the tracks.
First I went home to search the internet for what a bear track in the snow looks like. And I found out that it is exactly what I thought all along on the path. Especially now that I've found this forum. If I'd read it before, I definitely wouldn't have come here, but somewhere else.
Otherwise, by nature I'm not fearful, but I'm afraid of animals. When I saw the first tracks, I told myself, nah, that's not it, and continued. But the further you go, the more snow there is, the more tracks you see, and you tell yourself it can't be anything else. Of course I started weighing whether to turn back or continue, because I had an original plan to make a loop up from Gotenica, down toward Kočevska Reka. I would definitely have turned back, but I didn't like that steep section under the rocky wall. I also have a fear of heights, so the path down the forest road was preferable to me. Yes, of course I started whistling and yodeling and talking to myself and more. Meanwhile, I kept thinking how foolish I was not to have inquired beforehand. I tried to recall everything I'd ever heard about how to react in a bear encounter. Of course I didn't take any breaks, I just hurried on. I thought it would get better soon when I reached the forest road, but no, there seemed to be even more tracks. It felt to me like an anthill of bears was strolling around, not just one. I saw tracks at every step. They disappeared only when I descended very low on the forest road toward the main road over Gotenica. The whole thing was quite adrenaline-filled. So those of you who are heroes, go up there (preferably in company), I'm not going up again, at least not anytime soon.

Yes really, to be honest, the whole way it seemed to me that we were walking just a little one behind the other.
My throat hurts a bit too. At home I told my husband in an embellished form that it seemed to me I had seen tracks, otherwise he'd still be scolding me saying why do you need that.

The bear has no complete winter sleep. It's said that it dozes. Otherwise, it wakes up like this several times and wanders around. If there are such bad winters, even more so.

Don't worry, the bear sees and hears you even without singing and whistling and will always move away from you, yes the quietest animal.

Yes, I must admit, I even thought about bears the whole night. I believe everything you wrote about singing and whistling. But the problem is that the imagination in your head works so vividly and you can't help it, even though you try to be realistic and tell yourself that nobody wants anything from you. Anyway, for safety, I'll tie a whistle or a plastic horn from a child's bike to my backpack so I won't have to talk to myself anymore. And one trail I planned ahead to Polšak hut I'll postpone for a while.
But after a good night's sleep, to be completely honest, I'm proud of myself, excited,..

Imagine strolling alone through those forests. I myself wouldn't dare go to that part of Slovenia, even though I'm very interested because my father is from there.

But maybe it's not a bear, what if the yeti has moved from the Himalayas to us eek velik nasmeh

On Saturday from Gotenica over Kameni zid to Goteniški Snežnik to Kočevska Reka. Below Kameni zid dry, further on the road southern snow about 30 cm, before the summit you sink in up to your butt. Towards Kočevska Reka southern snow, walking on the road is quite strenuous as it sinks.
On the upper road bear promenade as it's quite trampled by bears, saw none, weather nice sunny too warm.

We ascended to Goteniški Snežnik from the village of Žurge. From Osilnica approx. 10 km on a narrow but nicely paved road. The trail start to Taborska jama is unmarked - go behind the house right over the meadow to the forest. Soon we hit the marks. To Taborska stena approx. 1.5 h, from there to Goteniški Snežnik another hour (marked 1.5 h but only ~300 m height difference). Trail well marked. Recommend in a group.

Today with PD Škofja Loka to Goteniški Snežnik. Before Snežnik we also climbed to Kameni zid. Here completely winter conditions still prevail. We even found several bear tracks. For dessert we visited Županovo jamo near Grosuplje.

Two days of wandering with my better half we used for ascent to Goteniški Snežnik, via Gotenica - Kameni zid - summit - Kočevska Reka. The whole path is well marked and normally passable, at the summit there's a stamp and logbook.
Then we viewed Kočevsko jezero and drove to Berryshka chocolate factory, next day cycling along Kolpa from Dol to Fara and back.
