How to make a marking?

In recent years I've hiked a lot on Slovenian difficult and very difficult trails. Trails already look quite different at first glance from similar trails abroad. Cables are tightly tensioned, with so many pitons in between that using a self-belay set becomes almost impossible. I often meet people with sets attached but not using them because it's a waste of time.

But I'm not writing this article because of the well-visible differences between trails. I'm more concerned about the difference that's not well visible and requires a somewhat more engineering eye. I'm far from that but in my work so far I've encountered cables too and learned that it does matter how the clamp is oriented. It consists of a wire part and some large clip squeezing the cable. The wire bites into the cable and squeezes it preventing the cable from slipping. The washer is kinder to it, force distributed over larger area. Therefore when installing clamps the wire end always goes on the end part of the cable that terminates, on the live end of the cable comes the washer. Additionally a kind of guide for the cable is obtained which is installed at the end. This prevents the cable from being damaged at the top when we turn it and clamp it.

Renovation of the path from Kredarica to Triglav prompted me to write. What stung me most was that the guys above Triglav used a jackhammer and made a ledge so we poor visitors won't slip. I thought times of mining mountains are over. Ironically this happened just when the nature protection commission at PZS went after mountain bikers. I'd like to see how many bikers would have to ride from Triglav to make stairs and widen the ridge. But obviously there was a rush 14 days ago as those biker bastards rode so much a new ledge appeared.

The cable however is installed backwards in old Slovenian custom and already well damaged though pictures were taken less than a week after installation. So for the next markacists course I suggest collaboration with some engineer or at least someone who knows something about cables. Certain markacists obviously still know nothing.

The difference in cable installation is obvious and visible even to untrained eye. Clamps must be turned as in the bottom picture, cable end must face out. Every cable diameter has a specific number of clamps that must be installed. In the other picture only one works the other is placed at the end more for decoration. Additionally there must be a clip at the end over which the cable runs smoothly and doesn't start falling apart like the one in the first picture.

New cables on the path to Triglav from Kredarica, new ledge on the same path and good example of cable clamping from the neighboring country:

Well another one who knows everything. But when work is done on mountain trails you're nowhere to be seen. Load a generator once or 20 kg pitons on your back then shovel. Lp

Hehe, and the one carrying generator and 20kg pitons can he drill however he feels like? The guy nicely pointed out shortcomings and suggested (and argued) improvement and gets told not to meddle? Really nice attitude...

If you carry a generator to make ledges, no thanks. I just pointed out how it's done elsewhere and how here. In my opinion, to then set up the cable as it stands, there's no need to carry a generator, it's not worth it. No hard feelings.

Classic dilemma; if you see a mistake and open your snout, you get it on the head right away saying "what are you smartass, you do it like you preach". velik nasmeh

Mitja gave nice critique and example. All in place. So you think it's better to stay quiet and tolerate irregularities and potential danger?

That's the 'little Slovenians' mentality. Beat on the one who criticizes.

How many times I criticize something on this portal, suggest solution for some problem and I get beaten. Everyone bitches, everyone has something eating them, but when someone offers concrete solutions to solve a problem then hit him.

Because it's comfier and nice to sympathize than to bother and solve problem. People prefer to let people walk over them than stand up for themselves. Those who wanna bother a bit are choleric who complicate everything and play smart! But it's exactly opposite

One of the worst monkeying over self and nation is calling it with a diminutive. Smallness complex is obviously a deeply rooted thing.
Otherwise topic started by Karletto lost purpose. Right, Karletto, did you make the sign yet?mežikanje

Here I think not so much about whether we're Slovenians or little Slovenians, (Italians or little Italians, Indians or little Indians, etc... nasmehbut whether we're people or frustrated little ones.

To all experts and those who think they know everything about marking I suggest they sign up for the next trailmarkers' course, together we'll know and be able to do more. No need for any trade school to master this job; we're different people and markers aren't all the same, some have more experience some less. To every future marker I lay on heart that all work is done out of humanity and all gear you buy yourself not to mention the physical demands up there. So next time before criticizing what's right done and what's not think how much effort and sweat has been shed in hot and cold weather and how much material needs to be carried to the mountains so that a certain path is arranged. Thanks for understanding, praises welcome too, nice mountaineer greeting.

I think it's right that someone suggests improvements if needed. I know nothing about installing cables, but I'm grateful to people who do.
Regarding "too many bolts, can't use self-belay kit" I wouldn't know, I still used it (unless one cable for slippery path like over Balunjača on Boč e.g. for me dry not needed, but imagine nice if that path part wet slippery).
But think comparison police work and hill cycling not needed. Why? Unfortunately (or luckily) Triglav in Slovenia god's path cuz "Slovenian not Slovenian till stands on Triglav".
While mentality prevails paths to Triglav 10x or 100x overprotected cuz from Kredarica to Triglav capable people no need cables bolts and those without not get up/down safe. Think if not overprotected GRS intervene Triglav too much so right done overcareful.
Not become "little slovenian beating criticizer"... funny when someone criticizes then complains too many "little slovenians" on forum beat criticizer. If give criticism must prepared accept too.
