Janče (792m)

anze r7. 04. 2020 15:51:10
No one was in front of the house.
Even in the opposite case, I a bit ''cowardly'' calculated that he wouldn't send me back uphill.
I respect the boundaries of private land, but as you mentioned, there are no signs there.
The path is surely not much visited, so the frequency wouldn't be a problem.
Of course, it depends on the owner how he views and accepts people walking through his yard.

Yesterday (Thursday, April 9). From in front of the picnic area in the Gostinca stream valley along the gully by the stream past the Lepa draga junction and further over Seten brdo to Janče. Down to the Balent hamlet and more or less along the path past the scout home Breza and further along the Lepa draga stream valley to the car.

The path is marked only in the upper part, but quite trodden and nicely traceable. The hut on Janče, where there are always many visitors, is of course closed; the friendly grassy summit with fenced playground seemed sad to me. On the descent, I followed Borovničeva pot for a while, at the Balent hamlet I turned right onto the less used farm road. From it, after a few hundred meters, I turned left through pathless forest and then to the clearing where the interesting scout home Breza made of natural materials stands (46.051926°, 14.682319°). I continued along the Lepa draga stream, where a not very used path leads straight down to the namesake junction; I had to jump the stream several times.

As far as I have learned in the last days, this is one of the shortest accesses to Janče (one hour of moderate walking). Starting point: 46.065157°, 14.671545°, all in all under three hours.

The leaves have already sprouted enough, so ticks are coming! Maybe they are already here mrk pogled.

The day before yesterday (Friday, April 10) from the Gostinca valley along the cart track over Svisle to both Kajerts and between them down to Gradolski stream and up to Lazarjev vrh. Along the ridge path to Tomaž, to Vnajnarje and along Straška draga to the second picnic spot and along the road to the car.

I left the car at the first picnic spot (46.069374°, 14.668487°). The bridge over the stream looks rickety, so with a bit of acrobatics and stones in the water I jumped the stream nearby. On the return, I couldn't resist and tested it; it held my weight.

Past the improvised hunting shooting range I turned into the gully and then continued along a nicely traceable cart track to Veliki (522m) and Mali (504m) Kajert. Down the steep slope between both peaks and further along the SW gully to Gradolski stream. The descent was not too demanding, just the gully was full of fallen trees and leaves, under which slippery stones, water and mud were hiding.

Along the valley I continued toward the exit (north side, Boškaj house, private land). After about 500 m, out of pure curiosity I tried to follow some kind of path toward Mali Kajert, but it turned out to end in a gully that was even wetter and nastier than the one I had come down. So I returned to the valley and continued on the other side, along the steep east slope of Lazarjev vrh (452m), where I came upon a tiny pathlet (perhaps a game trail), which took me straight to the hunting blind a little below the summit.

I continued along the ridge (Borovničeva pot) to Tomaž and further to Vnajnarje. At the Lazar farm, due to newly made tractor forest roads, I missed the old cart track. I made my way to Gostinca along the leafy, wet and slippery Srnaška draga. I crossed the stream over the bridge a little before the second picnic spot.

Yesterday (Saturday, April 11) I repeated the wandering on a slightly smaller scale and in the reverse direction. First picnic spot, cart track to Lazar, Vnajnarje, Gradolski stream valley, Veliki Kajert and along the cart track over Svisle to the car at the same spot.

A little before the Lazar farm I heard sirens. Unusual and in the middle of the forest somewhat eerie. The firefighters were apparently on an intervention due to a fire somewhere in Rimčev laz. About a kilometer I continued along Borovničeva pot then turned right into the Gradolski stream valley, along which a cart track runs that slowly disappears. Somewhere in the middle of the valley I turned right uphill along the steep, full of blueberry growth and leaves pathless SW ridge of Veliki Kajert. After about 100 elevation meters, just like the day before on the slope of Lazarjev vrh, I came upon a tiny game trail (perhaps a hunting path), which took me to the summit, from where along the nicely traceable cart track over Svisle I continued to the picnic spot.

First day (green track) five and a half hours, 730m elevation, 16.5 km, second day (red track) good three hours, approximately 530m elevation and under 10 km.

I'm not complaining, I love nature in every form. But from the dark, damp and sometimes hard-to-pass gullies in the forests below Janče (that's all we have of wilderness and pathless areas in the municipality these days) to tell the truth, I'm already a bit tired.

j., I'm not just tired, but already properly bored. This was on yesterday's schedule: Debenjega vrh ridge and Grmadnik ridge, from which an unplanned excursion along the side ridge occurred, ending in thicket. I didn't feel like pushing through the tick paradise, so return followed and continuation to the starting point in Podgrad.

Hope you don't sink up to your waist in mud somewhere. These areas have plenty of water from what I've seen. Ridges are dry, dust rises on paths, but flat areas and gullies are watery.

Another municipal-lowland one. Leave car where Gostinca flows into Sava and head upstream on white road. Soon turn left into Gobnik stream gully. Interesting and unovergrown bed is quite gentle, can walk beside it all the time, now left, now right, sometimes right in middle. Avoid wading through leaves by jumping stone to stone. Some high leg lifts due to rotten branches and trunks piled along stream ensure no boredom overall. Above gully unnecessarily waded through very high blueberries and dry fern, but so far no bloodsuckers. Continued to Lipavčev grič and then toward Janče and further over Zavrh and Tičenca to small ridge where map names three hills: Mali Brovec and Veliki and Mali Kajert. Since my map had a drawn path that should reach Grdadolski stream, chose that ridge. But like previous hike, this time also detour, actually two, both ending in 'dead end'. Finally returned to Mali Brovec and descended to Gostinca stream and along it to start.
Quite some elevation gained (940 m), though no long steep climbs, all on over 19 km length.

Today we conquered Ljubljana's "Triglav", the highest peak of Ljubljana municipality, 794 m Janče. Various starts possible and accordingly long paths. Today start at Vnajnarje, walk to Janče. On return finally figure out what Breza is - hut of scout group "Rod Črnega mrava", used since 1957 and renovated for 60th anniversary...Nature is gorgeous, also views to Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Met some hiking acquaintances, even more cyclists, for them the ascent is quite demanding.

Yesterday (Wednesday, April 22) from Cesta v Kresnice over five ridges and four streams to Janče and back over Vnajnarje and Grmadnik. Started at the parking by the underpass under the railway. From Stari grad (438m) over Besnica continued to Lazarjev vrh (452m). At the saddle south of it there is a bench, from which I descended about 40m down steep overgrown terrain to the cart track under the ridge. Nearby is a small turnaround and hunting blind; between the turnaround and the blind I found, on a tiny steep pathlet or game trail, the way to Gradolski stream some 100 elev. meters lower. The valley entrance is from the north but blocked by a building with private land, as Anže R. explained last time; the owner is not thrilled by crossings over his plot. Recently my friend B. tried his luck anyway and sneaked past the house with the car. When they were returning, enchanted by the wilderness in these parts, with his wife, the owner was waiting at the car with a Kuvasz, weighing about 70kg, straining at the chain. B. and his wife probably have only their loud enthusiasm for the valley, which they expressed, and of course the friendly explanation, to thank that the owner let them pass without consequences.

Along the valley I went a good kilometer southbound, then where it widens a bit left up the blueberry-overgrown ridge to Veliki Kajert (522m). There I was a bit pensive and missed the direction and ridge, so I had to backtrack about 10 minutes. Continued on the forest road to Mali Brovec (610m), then a bit back and on the tractor cart track into the valley of Gostinca stream. The track ends at an adrenaline-inducing rickety bridge over the stream. On the other side the path led along the slopes of Lipavčev grič. Under the ridge it gets lost for some 10 meters, then turns into a pathlet. I also jumped to Kramarjev hrib (444m), then along the pathlet on the ridge and further on cart tracks to Lipavčev grič (642m) by the Andrejevec hamlet.

Down the dusty, dry-as-pepper cart track toward the Slapnica stream valley. Midway the path branches left; after some 100 meters it ends in a gully, which I crossed on a tiny pathlet that soon widens into an old cart track. This descends right down into a gully after a few hundred meters, which ends at Slapnica stream.

Along the road by the stream about 400 meters south, then at the gully in the slope on the left side of the road I decided for the ascent on the small ridge right of the gully. Although there is approximately a path drawn on the map at that spot, I didn't find it and continued about 150 elev. meters pathless uphill toward Bulantinov hrib, along which the marked path to Janče goes. Already in the upper part of the slope I came upon a very overgrown cart track that continued as a tractor version, on which I crossed the slopes toward Janče until it ended. Since the ridge was not far, I cut across the forest and reached the marked path in ten minutes. To Janče it was still about an hour.

From Janče, mostly by road, continued to Vnajnarje, then onward to Tomaž and over Grmadnik (569m) into Besnica valley. Continued along the stream on Ostrovrharjeva pot and past the millstone quarry directly to Stari grad, from where I descended to the car.

Altogether just under 33 kilometers and almost exactly 1900 elev. meters of ascent and equally much descent. I had viewed the individual sections of the path before; otherwise it would have gone more slowly. Except in the busier areas (Stari grad, Besnica, Janče) I met almost no one.

Today's holiday Monday was dedicated to Janče. From Lazar along the borovniceva pot toward Vnajnarje. The path is nicely marked, pleasant spring temperatures and colors, merging greens in the forest and blue in the sky. From Balant we turned left, through the chestnut forest and already joined the main road from Besnica valley over Gabrje to Janče. At the top some hikers, even more cyclists. Nice to have met hiking classmates and their Koroška kids. The nine- and six-year-olds biked up to Janče! They returned partly on the left path toward Bernardin and rejoined the borovniceva pot. All by the rules, all at a distance, even the president would praise us if he saw us. We spent a nice day, 20 km, 27,500 steps... it would really be a shame to sweep at home all day, as the wind superbly dispersed the pollen..

Yesterday (for the holiday on 27 April) from the southern side to Javor, then down to Besnica and back via another path. I left the car about a kilometre and a half beyond Dolenčev mlin. On the right there's a small parking lot for three or four cars, on the left two tracks branch uphill. I started on the right one, trodden but not driven on, which took me past Prstaje and Roje to the road. Continued past the church and through the village and a bit through the forest to Javorski vrh and then past two houses (Zavrharji) down on quite abandoned tracks to Besnica.

Along the road I went about a kilometre and a half west and then up the track back towards Lanišče on the ridge and on the other side again on the track and then on a path along the ridge and through blueberries down. I returned to the car left of both tracks.

In places more populated than mid-mountains and high mountains it often happens that a path or track leads between a house and a farm building. Walking such passages can disturb the owner's peace and property, even if the path has been there for a hundred years or more. I try to avoid such situations, but yesterday at Zavrharji I ran into something similar. The owner was very friendly. He said that lower down, in the area of the marked path, electric fences are set up to deter wildlife. So he advised me to take a less trodden track a few dozen metres away and explained which directions to follow. We parted nicely. But near Besnica the problem repeated. At the spot where the marked path goes back to the ridge, there's no bridge over the stream. The first bridge is a few hundred metres further, but access to it is again right by a house yard. I would have asked, but no one was in sight. So I just crossed.

Pleasant trip, three hours and a quarter, about 560m elevation and 12.5 km. But due to unplanned and unintentional walking near people's homes who live there in peace, it leaves a bitter aftertaste. Damn virus!

To the highest peak of the municipality we climb on foot, by bike or car. This time I chose the bike and came via the Besnica stream valley, climbed the eight-kilometre slope among a bunch of cars, hikers and cyclists to the top of Janče, where the hut is unfortunately closed and on top of that no passage to the viewpoint towards the mountains. Return via Tuji grm, Volavelj, Prežganja and Trebeljevo back to Besnica valley. More at:

Janče is our favourite spot. We have different starting points, different paths and lengths. This time our family four-leaf clover from foggy Ljubljana via Besnica valley to Trebeljevo into the sun. Houses at Trebeljevo are nicely kept, surroundings too. At Prežganje someone excellently tends a vegetable-herb garden. Dense fog in the valley, but we relaxed in the sun, really enjoyed it. At Volavelj we met our hiking acquaintance, chatted a bit. Path well marked and in under two hours we were at Janče. Lots of people in nature, but on the large area we spread on different paths and there was enough space for safe walking for all. Views were great, from Snežnik to Triglav, Kamniks and Kuma, saw everything. Almost a shame to return, so we continued over Vnajnarje to Lazar and down to Peclje. It added up to 20 km of pleasant walking. Nicely spent day in nature.
