Yesterday with group to Kal above Komna. Morning quick to waterfall. Parking before 8 not collected nor entrance for waterfall view. Obviously got it. Went past Komna hut-Koča pod Bogatinom and on to junction for Mala Vrata. There not right where cairns, but straight and under Kal to north-NW side. From there to both Kal peaks. Descent SE side, cairns, back to Koča pod Bogatinom. Extremely friendly hostess Metka served us nicely, met/saw Klemen Premrl one of the best ice climbers. Nice day good company. Tour ended around 8pm, then drive home via Sorisko planina, Davča, ski Cerkno, Gorenja vas.

Thursday was our lucky day, as we weren't really sure if the planned tour would even succeed. We started at Savica and climbed via Lepa Komna first to Mala vrata, where we took time to admire the surroundings, since on our previous joint attempt a few years ago we saw nothing, just fognasmeh. We also checked the possibility of crossing from there via Oslova škrbina to Lanževec. It would gonasmeh!

We walked along the path that winds to the right of Kal and at the first cairn at the start of the scree turned left up the slope. I can't complain, the cairns nicely guide you through the rocky world towards the top of Kal and we soon reached it. But our goal wasn't just the summit, but also crossing to Velika vrata and then continuing via stone slabs to pl. Lopučnice.

Very soon we realized that the descriptions we had with us didn't help at all, as they mainly describe approaches to Kal from Velika vrata, i.e. from the opposite direction. We stared at the world ahead and it wasn't clear to us where these gates actually are in this world, although both of us had been there oncenasmeh. Well, somehow we figured they must be in the direction between Čelo and Plaski Vogal. Where to start, where to actually direct the first steps? Nothing, we said, we'll stick to that simplest old description from 13 years ago (old PZS records), which says to descend along the old landmarks that silently testify to some old times. And cairns, if we see them, and that's it. We have to try at least, we saidnasmeh.

We circled the eastern summit of Kal (maybe that's Osojni Kal) and descended one level lower, circled a bit more and spotted two landmarksnasmeh. What luxury, as we knew we were on the right path. Well, not on the path, since there isn't onenasmeh. Direction is important, the rest is finding passages. Very soon we spotted a gully to descend and of course a cairn directing into it. Happy that maybe we'll succeed after all, we continued hoping to find new landmarks and further cairns. We admired the stone slab we were standing on, marveled at nature's work and watched for the abysses opening up ahead. We jumped over one, but later realized there was no need. Had to go back, but it was a bit hardernasmeh.
We didn't look much into the distance, had enough to do determining the forward direction. Where is that stone ledge mentioned by Peter2 and funnyboy, we wondered.

In the view, Glava za bajto had incredibly approached us, and with that the feeling that Velika vrata must be nearby. And indeed it was, suddenly we stood above them and a feeling of happiness overwhelmed us. We were saved and the goal achieved, we could already say, the day was perfect!

The descent via equally breathtakingly beautiful stone slabs was still awaiting us, on which we walked more relaxed by then, then the return via pl. Lopučnice and Komna back to Savica. Of course, without beer at Dom na Komni it wouldn't do, how could it, as we had almost 1800 m elevation behind us and walked total around 19 kmnasmeh.
Of course, we met no one in this stone world between Lepa Komna and Lopučnica, with combined forces we managed this loop, and I don't think it was the last time, next time maybe in some other variantnasmeh.

18.10.2022. This year we set ourselves to visit some pathless peaks in Travnikova dolina. One of them, nicely visible, is Kal. We already checked it out last time. And hoped our path wouldn't be an empty illusion. Larches in this part are losing needles. But we had heavenly color of the sky. Cloudless. And light wind on the peaks. We walked the circular path. Without rushing. Met no one. At the top of Kal there was quite some dilemma if we were on the right peak. But we were. Then descent to neighboring peaks, which are a bit lower but don't skimp at all on views.

29.10.2022, From parking before the barrier via Planina za Skalo to Oslova škrbina. Calm, clear and warm morning..Can't be better. Traversed the ridge to Mala vrata along the former Rapallo border.
From Mala vrata onwards cairns for help. From the saddle Kal is the right peak..? left peak is approximately same height. Through scree world past birches to Velika vrata and back to the pasture. Met two who came from VV direction.. Otherwise it's quite a solitary tour..and extremely beautiful…nasmeh If no cairns you go by feel and can't miss…

Kal from Komna on Friday in not exactly nice weather. We extended towards Lanževec but a snow shower under the summit ridge turned us from continuing. And the snow in that ridge wasn't really for enjoyment so we turned towards Poljanica and down and continued to the hut under Bogatin for goulash.

Hello,
does anyone perhaps have a GPS track from Velika vrata to Kal and then to Koča pod Bogatinom - or vice versa?
Thanks, regards

If you go in nice, clear weather, orientation here shouldn't cause problems, and there are quite a few cairns set up. In fog I advise against this path. Orient by V. vrata on one side and Kal on the other, depending on direction. If going from Kal to V. vrata keep as right as possible, then look for easiest passages over scree and ledges. If you hit the right direction, really super tour velik nasmeh It's pathless in the true sense, so not to underestimate.

Life is most beautiful after rain....only then does the sun really warm us. From below Zjabcev along old Italian military paths to Kal 2001m. To Mala Vrata and over peaks to Velika Vrata the path goes through rocky pathless terrain. To the top of Kal some cairns are set for help. The world here is different. Scree-like. Some ferns we saw on descent. No problems with the path, because it's known to us. Met no one. (21.10.2024)
