Mountain hiking destination was due to timber removal at Matizovec, again Košuta. Already early morning I was dragging from the sawmill to the road good 100m distance, through snow and ice, this time ordered plywood sheets. Nothing else left, but to grab two sheets 135cm x 35cm, 5cm thick and carry them to the car. First round about 40kg I carried in one go, second one twisted my arms due to blood-engorged muscles, so I dropped a bit, anyway much less I sweated later on the hiking tour (more rested) to 1700m above Šija. Then I went to Matizovec again for mother's thyme tea to refresh a bit. Already at home I knew that the first snow that fell on Košuta won't be good for any bigger endeavor, so I left winter gear at home. Conditions are such that when you break through the light and already thicker crust, it sinks into completely light powder, where you're immediately with foot on very slippery grass, so caution on slopes!. Crampons are even bigger trouble in such than without, ice axe is just good consolation. On the hiking variant today was a day on Košuta like walking in snowy paradise with blue sky. On forest road some drifted snow to knees in between, sometimes blown to grass, higher at 1700m some wind that intensified quite a bit on the ridge as seen from snow veils, quite cold. Further from Kofce initially very few hikers, later a bit more, some went along ridge to Kofce peak. On return I met also late hikers from Pula area who will probably overnight up there. Košuta ridges mostly blown clean, since north wind blew during snowfall. Hut keeper at Šija pl. said that on snowy Saturday already morning whitened few cm, after 2h already 15cm. 40cm snow fell, noticeable in leeward shady spots with sinking to knees and over. Also hut at Šija will now be open weekends through all winter. Regards!

On the day of 40 martyrs I went for a short break to abundantly snowy Karavanke. In between at Matizovec I loaded some final bundles. Snow also here enormous, crawled up to the plateau below the ridge of Kofce peak 1680m. Avalanche conditions higher still completely unstable, first 50cm by Norwegian method slab slides with less than half force, snow at this height on sun-facing slopes dry, also noticed some medium-sized avalanches from below Toplar. Snow height 2.20m and unevenly everywhere drifted with cornices, also now blowing from NE, on skis backtracked. Road to parking normal drivable, higher to Kofce old snowmobile track made, up there another 15cm powder fell, above Kofce on skis already sinks more. Avalanches were at several places of Veliki vrh and Toplar. For safer access conditions to Košuta ridge will need to wait more. Descent down from top still ok, lower only on ski track, too much snow.

On Saturday we went to Pungrat / Pungartsko gora (2025m). Since the road through Dovzanovo gorge is closed, the detour took us quite far around. During the drive it was raining quite heavily and when we finally parked it just stopped. We parked approx 100m before the fence at planina Pungrat, because it says on the fence that access is allowed only for owners. The parking described is probably 100m further from the fence. Through pathless terrain we advanced quite quickly towards the ridge and in between planned to go further along the ridge to the right to Pisenica, Klade and Visoki vrh. Well, at the top it was thundering, pulling hair upwards, so we quickly retreated back to the valley before lightning. We stopped at planina Sija where they welcomed us nicely and treated us, then we went on the long path back to the valley.

On Saturday with Blue and Nessy over Dolžanka, past Mrzli studenec and over Frata to Taborniški dom Šija for excellent lunch. Weather sunny with little wind, path over Dolžanka very icy in a few places, same on road to Mrzli studenec. But can do everywhere without crampons if you make a detour or go more to the side. Path over Frata at beginning a bit icy, then goes pathless through snow. At the hut blessed silence and peace, since here no such rush as at Kofce. To the car we went then directly on the road, since closer. Road to parking under Dolžanka dry and in very good condition. Pleasant afternoon spent in company of my fluffies

Nice, beautiful. Polona, how does Vižla behave towards other animals (dogs, cats, sheep, cows...)? It's a hunting breed, right?

Bojan, I guess no one told her yet that she's a hunting breed To answer you, no problems so far. I thought she'd be more excited about forest animals, that she'd chase something, but she doesn't care about those things at all. When she sees roe deer, she runs a bit after them, but turns back very quickly, since she never goes far from me. Since she's a pointer, birds should interest her the most, but so far she hasn't shown she's aware she's a pointer She's really obedient, such a cute pup, impossible not to love her

Vizslas are super companions for the hills, bitches are so attached to their owners that there's no fear they'll run off after game. My Bello and I have been intensively hiking mostly Slovenian hill country (also high mountains) for four years and we're having a fantastic time. Once a vizsla, always a vizsla!

When she sees roe deer, she runs a bit after them. Modern dog owners still don't know that they should keep them on leashes, under control. For those described above, it's better if they don't appear in the hills.

@capralbex, I can't make sense of your post, I'm fairly new to Hribi, but still I know that Polona has had her first doggy (Nessy) for quite some time, so I hardly understand the term "modern" owners. I've convinced myself several times that some non-dog owner really doesn't belong in the hills.

Old-fashioned owners think a dog belongs on a chain, or what? If it has trained recall, I see no reason why the dog should be on a leash during a walk in nature. The bigger problem than the dogs themselves are uneducated and irresponsible people. Such people usually have uneducated dogs too, and they don't belong anywhere, not just in the hills. The fact is that hiking is very popular now and there are more and more people in the hills. Also because of that, the level of behavior culture has dropped, and that cordiality we hikers cultivated towards "fellow sufferers" in other times is no longer noticeable. Human competitiveness, fueled by mountaineering exhibitionism, is increasingly expressed. I see a much bigger threat to the mountain habitat in that than in a dog expressing its hunting instinct with a few steps towards a herd of roe deer, provided it stops on its owner's command, of course. The mindset that dogs don't belong in the hills no longer holds water. Just peek over the northern border, and we'll quickly find plenty of mountain huts that are dog-friendly. We should think in that direction here too, and encourage caretakers to make their huts dog-friendly. If that happens someday, my Bello (more likely one of her successors) and I could go on multi-day trips in our mountains, not just limited to day hikes.

@Iztok, thanks for your words @capraibex, given that Blue is 5 months old and still puppy-playful, she does run a bit if a roe deer jumps a couple meters in front of her onto the path, otherwise she doesn't chase them, just like the 13yo Missy and 8yo Nessy don't. So, I'm definitely not a modern owner, I've grown up with dogs all my life. I never tie my dogs, except in settlements, because they obey on command, which is really rare these days. I didn't have them tied even a few days ago when I met a policeman who is a dog handler in the forest, and we had a nice chat as two dog lovers. I often meet hunters, of course with unleashed dogs, and no one has complained yet that I should leash them, since they see how obedient they are. So please don't lecture me about my dogs. If you don't know me and my dogs, don't judge us. Probably easier for you not to appear in the hills if everything bothers you. Let me hint that my dogs are unleashed even in the hills, the older two have conquered more than 150 two-thousanders already, and to this day we haven't had any problems, neither with people nor animals, despite numerous encounters with chamois, ibex, snakes, bear, mouflon, marmots, wild boars...

I'll be short, I fully agree with Samorog, our Pomeranian too, which doesn't have a hunting instinct, is always off-leash in hills or nature (of course not in settled areas) and we haven't had any problem, comment or anything offensive in that sense - by the way, although it's a small dog and by many seen as more "couch", she was already on Kompotela, Mrežce ... @Polona, I'll always stand up for animals and people who respect them and know they don't belong on "chains".
