Kolovrat

Here, sadly sadly, two (three) days after last post, rain washed away even that modest snow, not blanket, better sheet mežikanje
But this time Kolovrat excellent viewpoint to get feel for snow on Krn, Krnčica, above Razor...etc.
Otherwise, for more need to go close up to see of course.

Even in mid-summer it can be quite pleasant on Kolovrat if we catch a day when rain has cooled the air. Otherwise on the exposed ridge at around 1,000 m.a.s.l. it's way too hot for longer hikes. Despite that, it's precisely then that Kolovrat is most visited. Numerous tourists are drawn mainly by the open-air museum, hikers and cyclists are plentiful too.

The Slemenska road over Kanalski Kolovrat is less scenic in summer than in winter time, but still an inviting alternative to driving through Soča Valley. The route goes through nicely arranged villages Srednje, Kambreško and Lig and descends via Korada to Goriška Brda. The road between Kolovrat and Korada is ideal mainly for cyclists who have mostly not discovered it yet. Tourism-oriented hikers can combine strolling around Kolovrat with ascent to Korada and Sv. Jakob and visit to the pilgrimage church Marijino Celje at Lig. Sabotin is along the way too and on hot days we can drive almost to the top on asphalt road, Brda always offer something.

The Solarji-Kuk description covers the entire Kolovrat ridge. Most hikers start walking at the Open-Air Museum (instead of to Solarji we turn right towards Livk). More about Kolovrat and accesses is written in the first post on the first page. Via the road over Kanalski Kolovrat (Kambreško-Lig) we can avoid driving through Soča Valley (Volče-Kanal-Solkan/Nova Gorica or vice versa).

Today quite a few of us, with cameras in hands, waited for sunset on Trinški vrh (Kolovrat).

The show that started a few minutes after 4 pm lasted over twenty minutes, and the view was completely free.

Yes, sunsets on Kolovrat never disappoint.

Paths on Kolovrat are trodden, the road plowed and salted. nasmehnasmeh

I was also there yesterday in this area. It was nice, just visibility was poorer. Too bad Tadej we didn't meet.

From the shadow of the stamp box, you can see you were several hours ahead of me on Kuk. Visibility was really poor though. Too bad we didn't meet, last time almost eight years ago on Raduha.

Kolovrat never really attracted me much. But yesterday's wander along its ridge, from one rounded hillock to another, while admiring the white mountains outlining the horizon borders, convinced us otherwise.

Wonderful ridge, wonderful soft path along it from the top Na gradu to Kuka that calls for a repeat. It captivates from the first summit, where you marvel at the view, then on the next rise you admire the tree right on top that you can't leave with your gaze. Beautifies every view, whichever way you look. Apparently the most admired tree on the whole path for a long time.
But we didn't just walk the ridge, we wanted to tread the surrounding roads too. First to the Italian road at the bivouac and continued along it to the saddle under Kuk. On descent from it we dropped to it too, since ours was fully snowy at start and in shade. So we combined both, turned to ours only at the Open Air Museum.

Alone on the whole path, peace and quiet constant companions, only met one hiker on return who said she started lower and walked only the road. That's nice too!

Saturday, 3.7.2021 (bike trip)

It cooled a bit, so I sat on the bike and headed to the scenic Kolovrat ridge. Actually to the road just below it. I started in Kobarid, turned towards Livk at Idrsko, arrived after 5 km of arduous pedaling up a very steep climb, so I rested there for the first time. Higher up I rode past Nebes, the climb was more hellish than heavenly, I barely pedaled to the end where the road dipped down. Near the open-air museum I found a bench in the shade and relaxed, it took a long time to eat my fill, quench my thirst and rest. After a short walk I sped towards Volče, flew like a "crazy skier", if there had been less oncoming traffic and especially if I had been braver, it would have gone even faster. In Volče I braked in time to take the bend towards Kobarid, then on the main road I pedaled as if on one of this year's Tour stages, when I turned towards Volarje I calmed down and continued leisurely in tourist style along the old road. Before returning to Kobarid I climbed to the church of St. Lovrenc, where Simon Gregorčič found eternal peace. I too found peace and quiet there, and wonderful views of the Soča valley and the mountains above it. The continuation was strenuous, hunger was increasingly bothering me, so after the stop at Napoleon's bridge the bike itself turned towards the Fedrig pizzeria. There I properly satisfied my soul, it was deserved after such an outing, then rode an honorary lap to the other side of the town where the vehicle was waiting. It was great, especially up on the panoramic road, so I'll return in autumn and check out the Italian side too. And add a peak or two in the ridge for some mountains on top. nasmeh

Yesterday wonderful day on Kolovrat. Started at Solarji pass, some sledders there. Marked to top Na gradu, strong wind, then open-air museum, Trinški vrh, past bivouac Zanuso with visitors, to Nagnoj and past parking above Livške Ravne to top Kuka. Warm day, wonderful views, path snowy, quite some visitors. First visit, but very nice places. Safe to all. nasmeh
