Ljubelj - Košutica

Forecasters predicted nice weather today and it would be a shame not to use it for some mountain visit. Decision to drive to Ljubelj, hike to Košutica peak. Spotted this peak winter sledding here and then decided to visit it.
Morning quite cold, but warmed quickly as old Ljubelj road steep. After hut Ljubelj path dips to Austrian side, but right branch soon steep up again. Pleasant ridge walk then final steeper to top.
Path mostly frozen, snow only patches.
Hut Ljubelj open only weekends.

Back to mountaineering paradise where nicest for me, today's afternoon used for ascent Košutica (Baba). First to planina Korošica, up to Košutica, there stop over 30 min, then to old border Ljubelj (muddy path) descent near tunnel, then back above road to start where car, met two on Košutica. Path small snow patches, snow soft, path muddy slippery returning to Ljubelj.

Yesterday's hike was 1A, at the top in complete silence, peace, no wind and pleasantly warm, this Košutica reminds me of Polhograjska grmada. Returned past one tunnel, next to it a cave... sometimes it's worth going off the path too.

We also climbed to Košutica yesterday. From Ljubelj over the old border crossing further on the Austrian side. Path through the forest slippery due to mud, but further along the ridge nicely passable, no snow. At the well-visited summit, beautiful views of the Karavanke trio (Begunjščica, Stol and Vrtača with Triglav in the background), to the Košuta peaks with KSA in the background and to the Austrian side. Fog in the valleys. We descended back via the hunting path past Pl. Korošica. There are some fallen trees along the path, so some climbing over branches and trunks is needed.

From the roadman's hut to Planina Korošica and then along the western path to Košutica. From Košutica along the eastern path to Hajnževo sedlo and back to the planina. From the hut along the hunting path to the valley. Nice weather, quite a few hikers.

Today three of us went along the western path to Košutica. Conditions really wintery, both in temperature and snow amount. No footprints anywhere, locally we had some trouble finding the path. Serious snow starts from the junction before the planina towards Košutica. Locally more than half a meter of snow, locally rocks just dusted and frozen, requiring great caution. Altogether we encountered about three minor issues that required thinking and caution, mainly on steep terrain and ridge, mostly due to new snow covering all traces of the summer path. Despite severe frost, it was sinking everywhere to the ground, snow extremely loose. No problems with descent, we went back on our tracks, first 400m descent despite very deep snow sections with crampons. Now the path is fully trodden on this side and I think followers shouldn't have issues. From the top to the other side towards Hajnževo sedlo we somehow didn't dare descend, because we don't know the path at all and the view from the top to the other side with snow-covered slopes wasn't inviting. Maybe different in ascent direction. Serious winter ascent in April. Nice.

We need info on crossing Lj. babe over Hajnževo sedlo to old Ljubelj. Recently there was info that the path over "lojtra" is damaged.
Do you have any info? Is the path passable despite the landslide? thanks!

Path done once in June as part of traversing the entire Košutina cordillera. Descent from Veliki vrh to Hajnževo sedlo - via ferrata a bit more demanding downhill, fixed protections ok. From Hajnževo to Košutica (Baba) unmarked but track followable, final cables ok. Descent from Košutica to old Ljubelj via junction with path from Korošica and past Grunt along (I think there are a few more) lojtres. There is a slightly wobbly little bridge at one exposed spot otherwise lojtres and cables ok. Lower down need to be careful (especially in wet and in dark as it was for me) when walking along the edge of the collapse, which is visible from the road if driving from our side towards the tunnel. Here really all caution needed.

Maybe something changed in the meantime. Perhaps they know more at the Koča na Ljubelju.

Saturday -12.9; planina Korošica above Ljubelj and Košutica; herdsmen on Korošica finished the season, "gazda" confided they'll drive the last cows away in the evening; the hut was full of youth, from preschool (kindergarten) and primary-school children with pleasant parents, on top also a larger group of high schoolers with guides; we all enjoyed the warm late-summer day, admired the clear views and martinčkali in the windless conditions, even on top; surprisingly the hut on Ljubelj was closed, which crossed plans for many returning that way, luckily at the intermediate stop - the planina - very ample tasty food was provided; I returned in the approach direction, on my favorite hunting path; p.s. parking at the start on the bend was covered with heaps of gravel so no more parking there; lp

While reading the description, I see that after three years the path is no safer. Very slippery and unsafe section especially the ascent to Rjava peč. Just mud. Total ice rink. You can see that not long ago (wood still looks good) they tried to make steps, but everything collapsed/slid off, so you can't use them. Good that I had poles to somehow pull myself up the mud on hands. And thank God I didn't take kids with me. Path in places sheer precipitous and at the thought of mud under feet... Then along the ridge pure enjoyment, on planina still solitary. Just a shot to Hajnževo sedlo and quickly to Košutnica. Down from planina just along the forest road and copacop back to Ljubelj. Such loop takes a good 5 hours walking. Lp

Today nice day on Košutica, path Vranček-Korošica-Hajnževo sedlo-Korošica mostly dry. Small patches of snow especially on western path make a step or two tricky, but no major problems.
