Loud talking in the mountains

Print
Mate072. 09. 2009 14:07:36
Hi

People go to the mountains for peace, relaxation, health, love of our Slovenian mountains etc.

Whenever I'm hiking somewhere, I hear voices 100-200 meters or more away or people shouting like magpies. Can't they be quiet? If they have something to chat about, let them stop somewhere and talk in peace; they aren't alone up there somewhere.

Same goes for about a dozen hikers when everyone talks very loudly. F**k, be quiet, but you aren't alone.

People have zero respect for mountains or hikers:roll:

Maybe earplugs are the solution...

What trails do you hike? I mostly meet and hear almost no people.

Here earplugs come in very handy.

@vv
Yeah right. Nothing better when hiking in mountains than listening to wind, rustling of rocks/sand under feet, calls of some animals, ....

@aljazek
I choose easier/partly demanding trails.
Last time going to Kamniško sedlo and hear from Planjave some huffing, when I reach the top I see four hikers then another arrives oh man I'm tired and that was heard at least 100 meters away. That day I met also about 7 other hikers....but didn't hear any of them speaking loudly.

Obviously some are still not cultured especially those 4 hikers.

Hello!

We go to the hills to enjoy peace and view/panorama, to admire plant and animal world, perhaps to boast later what we achieved.nasmeh

Sometimes a bit of hustle is welcome (e.g. this year I went from Zadnjica to Dolic and met only 8 people and that's 2 before the hut), but yesterday when I went to Nanos I heard some shouting and thought someone is falling but it was just some girls yelling. Well then I heard they were up there first time and it was probably from excitement.

But it happens shouting and loud listening to folk music and associated with alcohol consumption (not just to unwind!nasmeh), well about this nicely writes in yesterday's - 1.9.2009 - Bonbon (supplement Primorske novice) journalist Tino Mamic. Read it. I agree with all written there.

As everywhere some rules should apply also in hills or mountains.

Oh man, Tadej, where is this photo taken? I haven't experienced anything like it. Looks like I don't hike such "touristy" paths.

Mate07: yeah, Kamniško sedlo is really visited, early hour usually saves me from the crowd velik nasmeh

Piz Boè (Italy), supposedly the easiest accessible three-thousander in the Dolomites.
In the morning, when there's no crowd yet, you can see marmots too.

Lately at more crowded spots there is really indescribable crowds and consequently racket and boozing ... our huts don't lag much behind and with rare exceptions (Stanič, Peca and some more) it's just about profit, hut keepers rather servilely keep quiet at their cash register $$. Not to mention the urine smell at every corner.
Once again, so no avalanche of replies to my post ... I'm talking about the most visited spots in our mountains.

One thing is mountaineer, hiker or alpinist, another is tourist. Everyone can be classified into one group based on their attitude to nature in the mountains. Useless shouting negatively affects nature same as littering, using unmarked paths or picking flowers, mushrooms, fruits etc.

@joža x

and we're back there... littering, picking flowers, mushrooms, fruits.....
well, that one is a bit harsh: using unmarked paths.

Um, what's the difference between a mountaineer and an alpinist? That interests me?

Weren't there just a couple of years ago some bitter debates around these two terms between PZS and someone else?

Regarding loud talking. With my boyfriend in the apartment we literally whisper because otherwise our neighbor completely freaks out... Due to financial strain we can't move to another apartment. Where can we relax? In the middle of the city, village, fields, mountains? We don't shout but we like to sing some cheerful song loudly sometimes. When will "TNP" appear to protect young people in financial distress???

Mate07 - if you go to Kamniško sedlo, then you really can't expect peace. I was there only once exactly because of that. You will have to think of other paths, there are many...

Don't misunderstand me too much, no problem if someone occasionally shouts or calls someone where they are, but talking very loudly about everything for 1 hour and being heard 100 meters or more away is a bit too much.

I went to Kamniško sedlo once during the week.

Just for one comparison.

Some couple was standing 20 meters away and I couldn't hear how her husband was talking, which hill is where.

Those magpies I heard 100 meters and more away, how they were yelling. And I understood them all, so probably they could be heard on the neighboring hill and even farther.

Or something in the Julian Alps, met many couples and I could hear them barely 10 meters away while a dozen hikers already 100 meters and more ahead.

Maybe you heard the same as me...

On the top of Planjava there was actually an about 15-year-old boy yelling so loudly that he won't have a sandwich but sister's frutabela confused and listing various Olševa, Raduha and Brana, that I almost left Rio Mare up there and went back to the western summit to chew just bread. And the wind was howling quite a bit...

Žiga, I meant true mountain lovers who love mountains and will do everything for the natural environment up there. Those others go up to collect fitness, trophies etc., which is also ok only if they really care about nature. About using paths all over the hills I think no need to explain how it affects nature.

That's how it is, Slovenes love to do it in huts! I don't know why but that's how it is and foreigners aren't much better either. Of course it doesn't apply to everyone nor to the majority but the loud minority can stand out very very much.
On Wednesday some from Tržič had 50th anniversary at Kredarica. It was a real party and surely it bothered many hikers but in the hut they support it because that way they sell A LOT of drinks, surely also some off the counter.

I have to add something to this topic because it pulls me, true if the group is larger they are louder, which I also don't like. Once my husband and I took friends to the mountains (married couple) and we were already louder, which wasn't to my liking either, so we did a similar tour the next weekend but with another summit.
But still we weren't as loud as this year 4 hikers on Olševa who could be heard from one summit to another, I barely convinced my husband it wasn't worth the anger but there was no satisfaction in my soul, because this noise bothers you anyway which you try to avoid and go to the mountains for.
Lately we are looking for more solitary unmarked or hunting paths to avoid the 'noise', for example last ascent to Kalška gora, on the way to the top just me and one chamois.
Cheers and safe steps.

Sorry but in huts let people do what they want of course what is allowed. Just somewhere in the middle of the tour or on the mountain top or anywhere else outside the hut let them speak normally not converse in high tone or yelling.
