Today David and I went to Matajur on skis from Matajur village. The road was nicely plowed, but only to the village. The hut is closed. There is visibly too little snow for good skiing, but we still managed to get to the top. Of course skiing down wasn't exactly enjoyable, it was more of a struggle altogether ...........but we gained some fitness, which doesn't hurt at all .

Sunny afternoon lured me to Matajur. Road to Matajur village and a few km towards Pelizzo hut is clear. Little snow, and what there is, is icy. Views from sea to Julijci were great. Neither wind nor cold bothered.

Krn is nice to me too, although it gave me wind. I heard they've renovated the shelter, enlarged it or something. Wishing you lots more enjoyment on its summit.

You heard right, they renovated it, you can sleep there although there are no beds , but there are blankets and wood without a stove . Thanks for the nice wishes. On top it's always nice... regardless of circumstances

Gomišček shelter was renovated over the summer, bivouac or winter room are unchanged and offer no comfort.

Please reply, what's the condition on Matajur. Thinking of starting from the west side from Italy due to bora, if there's any shelter at all.

On the Italian side of Matajur the only shelter is Pelizzo hut or Dom na Matajure on the west slope, and of course the chapel on top.....if you mean built shelter...there's no natural one. If you're afraid of bora I recommend the path from the village Avsa above Livk, from where the path to Idrska planina goes through the forest, then to the top more or less sheltered. Snow is just a trace. Good luck and no wind

Jojoj, crampons mandatory in the backpack, otherwise you'll jump from rock to rock and slip on the ice like penguins. I started from Avša. At the summit I signed the Italian summit book for the first time. Then I lunched in Dom na Matajure. Fun fact: no price list in the hut. Pay what you think the order was worth.

It seems I lost one gray gaiter. Path from Avša along footpath to Idrijska planina. Then onto gravel road over border to Matajur. So up Matajur from ita. dir. Returned on gravel road to Jevšček.

Karletto, in the part of our path from Avsa that overlaps with your ascent path we didn't notice any lost equipment even though we started very late. Conditions on the path in the Idrijska planina area are really as described. We ascended to the summit from the northeast side on pleasant dry snow without problems, the descent on the Italian side is another story and requires gear and caution.

Sorry. I'm bumping the thread because on Sunday I lost a gray gaiter. The route went from Avša along the footpath to Idrijska planina. Then I took the gravel road leading across the border to Matajur. So I ascended Matajur from the ita. direction. I returned on the gravel road towards Jevšček village and then to Avsa!

Karleto, on descent from Matajur before Avsa village, I picked up a gray-black gaiter, probably yours! Otherwise, I spent a wonderful sunny and warm day!

Nice that you found each other Anyway, I'd have one question for you, namely what are the conditions like on Matajur? I'm mainly interested in approx at what height the snow starts?

Juhuuu tminkariver check email. Snow starts after first 30 min walking, say at 1100m and then you'll only walk on ice. As said without crampons it'll be hell! On western side path to summit is less icy. Hut on Matajur open weekends, for Pelizzo hut don't know schedule. Back to Avso on 7km gravel road completely dry.

Today I lured daughter and "granddaughter" to hills and chose Matajur: up from Avsa on old path southern side and down northern side past Idrijska planina. Weather as everywhere extreme little snow but quite icy so small crampons Verige Lesce served excellently.
