Today's Matajur I can describe with all superlatives. The road is drivable to the parking lot above Matajur village. To the summit trampled, in the morning still hard, around 11 a.m. already a bit softened. Not a cloud, views far around....beautiful, gorgeous.

On Easter Monday Matajur sparkled in the sun and fog.

I started walking above Matajur village, where the sun rays warmed nicely. I continued past Rifugio Gosnach to Maršinska planina and then to the pond and Dom na Matajure.
The night's snowfall created a true winter idyll, which would fit better in pre-Christmas than Easter time. Fresh soft snow was just a few cm, the old base mostly hard except in drifts, where it sank nicely without crampons. Over Maršinska planina there was still huge snow, but two predecessors had cramponed the path, easing my progress. The steep path to Dom na Matajure was, as always, well trampled.
When I reached the pond, clouds were already rushing over the sunlit summit of Matajur. At Dom na Matajure the fog was so thick that I could see only a meter ahead. I reached the summit by following the tracks of the predecessors. In the dazzling whiteness of snow and fog I saw almost nothing. I felt like walking in total emptiness. When I spotted the church, I sighed with relief.
I headed down to Rifugio Pelizzo. Soon the fog cleared and the sun shone again. There was also quite some snow on this part of the path, but it was already more softened by the sun.
The road was snowy for a few bends below Rif. Pelizzo, but 2/3 of the road from Matajur village was already bare. Accordingly, the number of Matajur visitors was appropriate.

Today I planned to go to Mali Golak, but due to the weather forecast and checking webcams I changed my plan. And of course where else but to Matajur! Hoping to get high enough to catch some sunray despite the forecasted fog.

But the forecasts proved true, my hope futile. At least at the start.

Fog started above Matajur village. So I drove another 2 km above the village, to where the road was clear.
Due to worsening visibility I didn't dare experiment and went up to the summit via the shortest path past Rifugio Pelizzo. I never go up this path in good visibility, as staring at the target from start to end of the ascent is pure torment for me. Other paths are much nicer anyway, both for variety and stunning views.

I barely made it to the top through denser and denser fog. During ascent two border collies and one on a bob passed me from the fog, below summit also a skier. Snow was nicely compact, snowshoeing comfortable. I descended following my own tracks. Despite zero visibility, enjoyment wasn't lacking. Especially due to immense peace and knowing I was completely alone on this mighty hill.

When I reached the car, fog suddenly lifted. So I took the same path again to the top seeking magical moments, which hid in fog after few minutes. Still I went on. Though sun wasn't hinted in the sky, its rays through fog warmed strongly and made whiteness even more dazzling. So I continued hoping for another clearing. Snow softened quickly and each step heavier despite snowshoes.
Just below summit sun conquered mists again. Second time at top there were even some views and endless peace and silence.
I mostly slid down to valley, as snowshoes flew on southern snow.

Do you perhaps have info if the path from Avsa is trodden at all?

Lubadar, if I'd seen your question earlier, I'd have gone a bit further around and checked the logbook too, so my answer won't be quite accurate.

Today I went to Matajur past the Skrila spring/fonte. In snow, snowshoe tracks barely visible in places (predecessor probably went early morning when still frozen). Midday snow was very crusty and would sink deep without snowshoes. Despite lots of snow, path easy and no issues. From Skrila spring to junction with old path from Avsa, pure untouched white. On old path from Avsa up to ridge where normal path from Avsa joins, path already snowshoed by several (not necessarily from Avsa, same path from Mašera village). Still lots of snow up to ridge. I joined ridge a bit higher, so didn't see path from Avsa. But given the highway on ridge, I think path from Avsa is also trodden and snowshoed.

Anyway, another great day on Matajur today. Highest summits in clouds, so views missing the final touch. This time Italian forecasters right predicting mists and clouds above 2000m, ours up to 2000m. At least on height both correct.
Today's specialty was snow in sepia tones.

On Sunday 7.4.13 they plowed the road almost to lower parking below Rif. Pelizzo, so only 500m snow to Rif. Pelizzo left (pics 3 and 4 from 7.4.). I assume they'll plow to end soon (if not already), as Rif. Pelizzo open on weekends and probably caretakers pay for plowing.

Hiking path from Matajur village was clear in lower part, given temps and today's rain, I think clear to Maršinska planina. On these south slopes snow melts fast, if wind doesn't blow it away before.
Anyway all winter direct path from Matajur village well trodden, same direct from Rif. Pelizzo. So snowshoes not needed on these most crowded paths. Of course walking with them usually easier.

For other accesses (from Maršinska planina past lakelet or below Rif. Pelizzo past Skrila spring/fonte) snowshoes mandatory. More than 1m snow on those. With forecast temps and sun will be very soft and wet.

Maybe I'll go up tomorrow to see what's new.

Today I wanted to make a loop around Matajur, but wet sliding snow prevented it. So only 3/4 successful.

Started walking at lower parking under Rifugio Pelizzo. Today road cleared right to top, fully dry. Above Rif. Pelizzo turned left to Maršinska planina and circled SW slopes of Matajur. On this part ~0.5m snow, though wet didn't sink too much. But dangerous holes under snow, sank few times so put on snowshoes. Trail will soon be mud, as this part usually gets trampled quick, now with no snow on road also interesting for cyclists. Path to Maršinska planina from Matajur village almost dry. Direct (steep) path to hut on Matajur as usual no problem, very little snow on it.

Continued with traverse under west slope Matajur to huts and on to lakelet. Crossing steep slope no issue, snowshoe grip good and snow not sliding.

From lakelet to hut on Matajur old tracks erased, but this access despite lots snow usually never problematic.

Continued snowshoeing under NW slopes Matajur to end of planina and on to saddle under north ridge. On planina path sank once and with snowshoes landed in 1.2m deep hole under snow. Otherwise pleasant walking. Under north slopes noticed several triggered avalanches almost washed by rain. On this part also Italian Civil Protection device for avalanche monitoring. Someone attracted to these sliding slopes, saw footprints several times on most dangerous part.
Continued traverse to saddle. Also on north ridge old tracks. Don't recommend ascent this way for a while, still lots snow. With high temps will stay wet and risky for slip.

From saddle descended under NE slopes Matajur and walked to junction with path from Avsa. This part pure snowshoe idyll, only animal tracks no others. Path from Avsa looked well trodden though rain erased old tracks a bit. In snow fresh tracks of one hiker whose crust didn't sink. On ridge to summit no issues.

From summit down south slope to turnoff for Livek. Plan was to circle SE slopes on old path then past Skrila spring back to start under Rif. Pelizzo.
Avoided this part before, as from Skrila saw it often slides here. Last week seemed snow sliding only under trackbed, above looked dry. So today tried. Didn't go far. Huge snow, instead of wide track steep wet snow slopes still sliding. Not adrenaline fan, turned back soon and continued on normal path to Rif. Pelizzo. Lower part almost no snow left, except far left (up right) some patches. Followed white strip, before observatory turned under house and down to lower parking. Towards Skrila spring still saw my tracks from last week.

Yesterday, my wife and I set off for Matajur on a beautiful day. We chose the Rifugio Pelizzio hut on the Italian side as the starting point and continued the path towards "Monte Matajur" and "Dom na Matajure".
The path at the start is completely dry (also drivable to the parking before the hut) and we cross snowfields only on two sections. From "Dom na Matajure", we continue on a moderate path to the Matajur summit.
This last part of the path is still heavily covered in snow, but it can be crossed without snowshoes. Caution is needed, however, as you can "sink in" and risk unnecessary ankle injuries.
We had a really beautiful day and enjoyed the beautiful views from the Matajur summit.

Winter is finally leaving Matajur too. In one week hot weather took at least 1 m of snow.
Direct paths from Matajur village and from Rif. Pelizzo were almost fully dry. I set off from Rif. Pelizzo past Skrila spring. To the spring it was also dry here, further up to 50 cm snow, which did not sink except where holes between ground and snow formed. There were more of these with each step. After it gave way into voids a few times, I continued with snowshoes.

On the path from Avsa, a snowshoer's track led to the ridge, other footprints were erased by the sun.
From the summit along the almost dry ridge to Dom na Matajure. From there with snowshoes to the lakelet, which after long months finally peeked out of the snow. From the huts onward to the end/beginning of Maršinska planina there was very little snow, so I continued without snowshoes. To Rif. Pelizzo I crossed the dry SW slope of Matajur, where there were only some snow patches toward the end of the path.

Another nice day on Matajur, though there were no views.

Freshly fallen snow lured me today to the beautifully snow-covered Matajur.
Since the morning was still all gloomy, and Matajur on the webcam was in fog, I only set off from home at 9 o'clock hoping that the weather in real life wasn't as miserable as through the window or on the camera. Already from the path, an amazing view of the white chain of Dolomites soon put me in a better mood, surrounding the green Friulian plain and Matajur rising above the mists.
I drove to Rif. Pelizzo. The road was dry to the top. There was snow from the starting point onwards from 20 cm, higher in drifts up to 1 m. Since fog was rising from the valley, I went to the top along the direct path, which was already well trodden.
Otherwise, the snow was so soft that the snowshoes sank right through. But still, I wanted some snowshoeing through untouched white, so from the top I initially planned to go down past the Skrila spring, but because of the fog that covered the entire eastern slope, I turned west towards the Dom na Matajure instead. From there I planned to the lakelet and then across Maršinska planina to Rif. Pelizzo, but after a few minutes of walking, fog enveloped me so thick that I barely found my way to the Dom na Matajure. From there I followed the track to Rif. Pelizzo. At the end of the path, thunder rumbled a couple more times, the top was still wrapped in fog, but the sun was already shining in the valley.
Despite the changeable weather, there were quite a few hikers on Matajur and a couple of skiers. Also from Avsa, at least one faithful Matajur visitor climbed up according to the logbook.
Since the sun was nicely warming in the valley, on the way home I also drove to Krminska gora (Monte Quarin), a 274 m high hill rising above Krmin/Cormons, from which on nice weather you get a view of the entire Friuli all the way to the sea, to the Hills and Julian Alps all the way to Vipava Valley and Karst. Today the Alps were hidden in clouds, so I'll return for a better view.

Yesterday's cruising around the flowering Matajur from Rif. Pelizzo across Ledina (route description in preparation) and further along the eastern ridge (Beneška route) to the top. From there descent along the northern ridge to the saddle and little lake on Maršinska planina. Short ascent to Dom na Matajure and crossing the slopes under Matajur from west to east. Followed by descent past the Skrila spring and the circle was closed.

From the wandering through boundless greenery I was deeply calmed and invigorated at the same time, so I ended the trip with a visit to Stara gora above Čedad (Castelmonte).

Three quarters of the family went to Matajur after lunch, up from Rifugio Pelizzo, down past Dom na Matajure. Weather held, only clouds somewhat spoiled the view. Path without features.
With my wife we spotted a girl, my son a witch, what about you?1

From the parking lot above Avsa village along the old path to Matajur, well marked. At the junction I chose the path on the Italian side...the sign says Dom na Matajure. I chose this path because it mostly runs in the shade and was the right choice given current temperatures. Good thing along the whole path was the SW wind blowing. Without wind it would probably be quite hot despite the early hour. A few people at the top, views not as clear as usual. Lots of raspberries, some blueberries too, but above all Matajur is a real flower garden.
