Only a couple of these spruces have been discovered in Slovenia. It's actually a rare mutation of the common spruce. Find more on the net.

Together with the columnar spruce, it is one of the rarest and most mysterious tree species in Slovenia. In Slovenia, 4 trees of this species have been discovered so far. Serpentine spruce - Picea abies f. virgata was described already in 1833, botanically named in 1853. They assume that the serpentine growth shape is caused by two independent recessive genes aa and bb, whereby gene a has a stronger influence than gene b. However, the mutation in this tree species has not been scientifically proven so far. Serpentine spruce has an irregular deep crown with long main branches, from which grow long, twisted, almost bare branches of the second order; only smaller branches have needles along the entire length. Branches of serpentine spruce are sinuous and long and grow irregularly in all directions; they sprout first horizontally, then sag a bit and are almost without side shoots, with longer and stiffer needles that brush-like cover the shoots from all sides. The twisted growth of branches strongly resembles the shape of a snake – hence the name serpentine (snake) spruce.

There is not much data on the locations of serpentine spruce in Slovenia. Marko Simič reported in 1961 about two specimens near Loški Potok on Notranjska, Tone Wraber in 1979 about a specimen near Godovič on Idrijsko, which is today designated as a natural value, Robert Brus mentions a location at Koševik above Idrija. The serpentine spruce at Paver is the fourth known such spruce in Slovenia. It grows right above the Trenta–Vršič road 300 m from the Julijan botanical garden.

But not autochthonous, so the number is useless (gardens).
One more trifle: as the Latin name already indicates, snake spruce is not an independent species, just a form.

I was many times at Trstelj, and once
I see near old military water reservoirs
how they are digging some treelets for the garden,
not spruce, not fir, smooth trunks, soft
needles, silver-green color, branches at 90 degrees, and even the locals didn't know
the name of this species! Is anyone "expert" about it??zmeden

Edo Kozorog, Janez Pagon and David Fučka prepared a small booklet Exceptional Trees of Northern Primorska, LTO Sotočje Tolmin, 2013. It also includes both snake spruces (Trenta, Godovič) and mythical ties between past and future. I recommend it.
