Poličanka

Print
črow5. 03. 2019 22:43:10

The Poličanka stream collects water on the slopes of Degarnik and Košarica. On its way to the Idrijca river it descends steep rocks, forming several beautiful waterfalls. In the lower course it calms into a few rumbles and through gorges and under the Idrija - Tolmin road slips into the Idrijca.

The path to the waterfalls is not marked and arranged. Whoever is skilled in moving in nature and able to climb grade II can view these waterfalls. The waterfalls are interesting for ice climbing during cold winters.

If we decide to visit Poliška gorge (Poličanka), we drive along the Idrija - Tolmin road to the village Reka. There we find the turn-off to villages Bukovo and Zakojca. From the turn-off we continue towards Tolmin another approx. 200 to 300 meters. Right after the bridge crossing Kozarska stream, we turn right onto cart track and park. On foot we continue along the road towards Tolmin to the first blind bend (500 m), right after it we turn right onto the path that quickly brings us into the gorge. In the gorge we continue searching for passages left and right by the gorges and waterfalls. At the second (highest) waterfall, we climb through the undercut well visible from below in the walls right by the waterfall. This is a very interesting passage with climbing around grade II. Further we again continue searching for passages to the meadow by the stream. Throughout the entire path through the gorge interesting passages accompany us with easy scrambling right by the stream. If we are not skilled at this, everywhere there is option for retreat and continuation on easier terrain.

On the meadow we can decide to continue along the bed or along the cart track to the junction with the road leading to village Police. Or on the ridge turn right downhill along the abandoned cart track that was once the only connection to village Police. Along this cart track we cross into Kozarska gorge, down which we descend to the starting point for Poličanka.

We can also connect planning a visit to Poličanka with a visit to Kazarska gorge (earlier I wrote Kozarska, after checking it should be Kazarska). This way we get a nice loop trail.

The Kazarska stream is formed by tributaries of smaller springs on the slopes of Degarnik, Bukovski vrh, Kojca and Roden. The entire stream bed is about five kilometers long. In the upper course it offers nice potholes and a couple of smaller waterfalls. In the middle part it calms down, from Lutne skale to Idrijca it offers some liveliness again. For a short time it even hides in a narrow gorge that is not passable without canyoning knowledge and gear.

If we arrive at Kazarska gorge from the direction of Poličanka, we enter the gorge below the Lutne skale climbing area. We follow the flow towards the valley seeking passages on the left and right bank. Here and there even remains of old paths. We bypass the impassable gorge on the left bank of the stream. First we follow visible remains of a path that rises slightly. When we see the stream exiting the gorges, we descend back to the bed and continue by the stream. We come across an abandoned power plant whose walls are built of lehnjak. Above the power plant we can see a large lehnjak wall and observe its formation. We continue through the opening of a large leaning (weary) tower and soon we are on the meadow where we parked and started the tour.

Yesterday again to see Poličanka waterfalls. This time not alone... We finished at Lutne skale climbing area and skipped Kazarska gorge. If it's needed here and there to set protection and calmly view the waterfalls, this tour takes up to four hours. This time I deliberately posted pictures of a couple passages that represent around grade II climbing. So we don't get any trouble, we rather stretched a rope. Even so two were properly wet.

At the exit from the ravine (at the top, above Hudičeva cerkev waterfall), in the last part of the gorge there is lush vegetation. Full of new trees sprouting after ice storm and brambles. In the gorge there are also still tree trunks that fell then. Therefore I advise retreat from the gorge above this waterfall. We retreat to the left slope of the stream (right if looking upstream). Along the slope we continue all the way to the top of the ridge, there turn left and reach the above described path for Kazarska gorge.

In this part of Cerkno area there are still plenty of nice paths waiting to be visited and described. We wait for autumn and winter, then we go into action.

Almost a year later, again in Poličanka. Since the last visit, someone has provided for easier passages. At the place where passage above the gorge had to be searched, there are now pegs. Now passage is possible right by the waterfall. The undercut is without excess iron, because the rock there is sufficiently structured. In the upper part I noticed only two more "prusiks", probably for easier orientation.
Nice walk, accompanied by the murmur of waterfalls. It will be even nicer when nature cleans itself of the debris left by the ice storm.

For Sunday the decision was made to head into the rather unknown gully Poličanka, which had been on the plan for some time. Its name was sounding more and more beautiful and familiar to menasmeh. Perfect spot for prescribed isolation, where you meet no one, hear only the murmur of water and birdsong. Well, we saw only one chamois, which had no interest in hanging out with us. The gully wasn't as dark as I expected, the sun was nicely sparkling in its waters, a rainbow stretched over the upper waterfalls and the magic of the moment was perfectnasmeh.
It also surprised me the tidiness of the gully, as if someone removed the branch debris, or nature cleaned itselfnasmeh.

We set off along the calm, peaceful stream, but this wading across the stream water didn't last long, the terrain started rising and the adventure begannasmeh. We needed to use all skills and strength to overcome all obstacles and barriers for advancing. Thoughts of what could happen if I slip and splash into the water, I resisted them right away, though I was hauling spare clothes in the backpack just for that case. Lots of risky crossings, steep climbs along the banks, pulling on branches and roots weren't spared us, hands grabbed whatever they reachednasmeh, feet catching balance on slippery terrain. Pegs are a big help, prusiks for orientation, not for protection. Well, though I must admit I sometimes secretly pulled myself up with their helpnasmeh.

In the gully you're fully busy, terrain difficulty demands caution and strength, waterfall beauties draw admiration. We did a loop tour and that was what inspired me from the start. From the gully we rose to the ridge Na Lipju, where we chased views toward Bukovo village, and above it stared at snowy Peči that sparkled in the sun on Sunday. We did the descent via magical Kozarska gully, where the pots drew me most, into which water pours and hides from eyes for a while. And when it runs out again, you marvel and stare. Gorgeous water and base too. Moss along the path quite a bit.

Tour that leaves its impression long after it's done. Thoughts keep returning me to the gully, to its demands and beauties, and to the triumph you feel when you conquer it. But I must admit, without my group's help at some key spots, it'd be much worse for me. Glad I stayed dry too, spare clothes unused; ruined hairdo, dirty pants and stained sleeves just add value to the tournasmeh.
