I agree with @keber1, but true that even here I haven't eaten bad jota yet. As for food schedule in huts I don't know exactly, since I haven't eaten there that much, but it's different in Italy due to siesta everything closed from around noon to three and that's in the middle of Alps in Cortina, come on...

Well, I've eaten ričet and jota of all sorts, from phenomenal to horribly watery without taste. As for Italy and food break I know well, when I arrived literally starving at Auronzo hut, which midweek gets couple buses of people per hour, thinking now nice snack, then find out they have only one sandwich left, as they serve again after six pm. Well that sandwich the one before me took. Well, since then this dumbest siesta in the world imprinted in my memory and so for Dolomites I always carry bunch of protein bars (since I don't eat sandwiches), lest total hunger grabs me again at wrong time.

For price comparison at hut Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele below Gran Paradiso 4061 m.a.s.l. beer was 6.6l 5 eur, in camp where we left kombi and car 0.4 l beer 4.5 euros.

I'm interested if one could get a spot in Dolomites hut without reservation. Going end of August. Mainly thinking Dolomiti di Brenta.

Hasn't anyone stayed overnight abroad without reservation yet?

For myself, I know that I wouldn't go to Brenta in August without a reservation, and I think it's the same picture elsewhere in the Dolomites. I allow the possibility that for one person something could still be arranged, but I have never played such a card.

ursula100075, I went last year with PD Križe on a two-day trip to Brenta. We slept in the hut Rifugio F.F. Tockett. I know they reserved beds in the hut about a month before. I don't know if they paid for the reservation. Last year I went with PD Za Selško dolino Železniki on the path around Tre Cime - path called Path of Six Huts. We inquired in the huts about reservations. There it was necessary to reserve and pay a deposit. We wanted to take the retirees section of PD Škofja Loka on this path, but then we didn't decide for this two-day trip, because it would require quite a substantial financial investment.

We've stayed there about 10 times and a phone reservation with name and number of people was always enough. True, I always ordered half-board, which is the rule there, and I must say it's worth it. They don't like those who just want to sleep, because they don't provide profit.
