Super hike! Very dear to me. Most beautiful in autumn when everything up top is golden. In the opposite direction it seems orientationally easier, as the path from Skočniki is easier to spot than Za Akom. (By the way, Skočniki are really incredible, completely hidden. You don't notice the waterfall until you're almost falling into the abyss and get a dizzying view of a roughly 40m high and extremely steep waterfall falling into a basin-like closed hollow.)

@turbo, hike to lick your fingers at, right? A few years ago I did it in the opposite direction. It tempts and calls for a repeat.

Bojan, you didn't prepare superficially for the hike. That's EMŠO's fault. Anyway, Za Akom is so nice that it's no problem if you lingered longer.

@katty It really is a hike to lick your fingers over and definitely worth multiple visits. Enjoy when you tackle it again @dprapr I personally take it in hand every now and then and check EMŠO. Did you know it's always the same!

There is also another path between the two "floors" that turbo hiked. I went from the direction of Ingota, where there's a bridge over the scree in one part and a cabin on the other side. Behind the cabin, a steep path climbs up, which is easy to follow at the start, but later somewhat harder in places. The start of the traverse is somewhere at the height of Aka - you climb up there along the ridge on the right bank of the stream. The path spectacularly traverses the S slopes of Rutarski Vršič, somewhere between 100 and 300 meters below the ridge. It's not very demanding, but you need to be careful in a few places so you don't slide away on ball bearings or trigger a larger piece of rock that day. The end is above the waterfalls of Beli potok, the path leads to a small ridge where there are quite a few trees downed by ice. The path goes higher, probably towards PP, but I went down the slope and came out exactly at the bench above the waterfalls.

Yesterday I headed to Rutarski Vršič from Rut. On the way, I was accompanied by the aftermath of a flash flood - from locally flooded path, scree deposits and larger rocks on the cart track below Jasenje, a bit above it a not at all friendly torrent that had to be crossed very carefully - here I mean the torrent on the marked path towards the Za Akom cirque; the one flowing past the chapel is even more roaring, I didn't find a crossing there. Higher up no problems with risen water, but of course everything wet - leaves, roots and rocks - which required extra caution already on the ascent. Crossing the Za Akom torrent was easier than the lower one, the path through the forest to the top of Vršič is followable despite fallen leaves, helped by quite a few cairns. About a hundred meters below the summit snow appeared, but just a sample, the path was still visible. At the top about 5 cm of snow. Weather was nice, beautiful combination of gold, blue and white colors along the path.

At Ingota it was completely quiet, at Finžgarjeva kapelica, behind which I turn uphill, likewise. The path drawn on one map doesn't match where I'm walking, so I try to find it more to the left, but there's nothing there, just leaves rustling in the wind. Again I'm drawn to the right and back on the path that doesn't match the map. Again I try to find it more to the left. Nothing. Higher up again drawn to the right and back on the path I've already left twice. I ignore the map and follow it steeply uphill until it turns left and starts traversing the north slope of Rutarski Vršič. Just before hitting the path from Beli potok I turn uphill and make my way to the other side, where I catch a pathlet that I more or less follow to the top. Just as I leave it, the first drops fall. As unpredictably as they started falling, they also stopped. Through the forest towards Za Akom there is quite a bit of downed wood, so it's not best to stick to the path all the time. Continuation to the junction for Mahovje quite wet. The transverse path towards the marked one going to the bivouac under Špik is very nice, Mahovje though, despite no water visible, in wonderful green shades.

The path you were looking for really doesn't follow the maps. Its start down below is quite unclear, but then it's nicely traceable. I did it myself on descent. The upper start is at the distinctive yellow rocks with water flowing over them. No issues to Zapreti pasture, but then numerous tracks confused me. In the end I climbed to Glava. Somewhere along I should've hit the path. And sure enough, my dog found it right ahead. Soon I saw the first cairns and descended without trouble. Nice spots, I'll be back for sure . Descent via Zapreti

Pastirica, I wasn't looking for the path over Zaprete, but the upper path leading to R. Vršič marked elsewhere on maps. Start was easy to find, just better to follow it than search where marked on the map.

Hope we're thinking of the same path. In the collection: ''Where are those paths'' there's this description and sketch. To Ingota via normal path from Rut. Well-trodden path starts right after Finžgar chapel. After ~200m better path turns left up, we continue ahead along the gully. Path becomes visible again and zigzags up. Once on it, it leads us without major issues first along the rib, then near the gully edge (Martuljek gully). At ~1300m turns left and in long traverse almost flat bypasses at least a third of upper Vršič area. Path over scree and bushes, widely cut. Towards end - after grassy gully - go straight not up. Then path into forest and to clearing (Robičeva planina, wrongly marked elsewhere on maps). To Vršič summit straight up ridge (pathless but passable). Or straight across clearing through forest to usual unmarked comfy path (BP4) from Skočniki. Both take about half hour.

Franc60, that's the path. Initially I wrongly thought it was the path over Zaprete. Since I didn't find the branch to Zaprete below, I followed the upper description. But I have a question. Does anyone know if from the path, after it stops climbing and turns left, a crossing right to Ak is possible? Grega, may you be bored many times more , there are so many hidden paths...

Yesterday (Wednesday, 1 September) from Gozd Martuljek past Finžgar chapel along the path on the north slopes of Rutarski Vršič to the summit and some wandering around. The path caught my eye because under Rutarski Vršič on hribi.net several well-regarded nicknames (in my opinion) have signed. Even (just quoted) priest from Dovje. At Gozd Martuljek parking after bridge around 7am only one of ~10 public spots free (others reserved for renovated Hotel Triangel, no idea where else to park). Past charcoal pile and first waterfall to Ingotova hut is Martuljek classic. A little beyond Finžgar chapel the path rises sharply, after ~150m becomes wider track, from which some tens of meters ahead right and slightly down branches barely visible path to streambed. Soon levels and in nice zigzags climbs steep rib left above streambed. From here no more orientation problems. At ~1200m turns left. Path through cleared shrubbery, larch forest and over a few gullies traverses north slopes of Vršič. Fairly well preserved and mostly unproblematic. Only at two or three spots slightly damaged by avalanches. But nothing serious yet. From fern-overgrown clearing (priest writes it's Robičeva planina) straight up ridge. First pathless past some old fallen trees, then found small but traceable pathlet. Solitary and nice! From summit continued to Bivak Za Akom, which from middle downward is full of fallen trees, completely at bottom a bit less. Bivak still stands , it seems to me that long ago when I was last there, it had nice view of Široka peč, which is now overgrown. Or maybe I'm wrong. It would be a sin not to visit the second waterfall too. Path without features, new little bridge built in July this year, met about eight foreigners. Waterfall really worth seeing, only right before waterfall the last section of the rope braid is torn. But new one already waiting coiled before the little bridge. Of course I couldn't skip Mahovje (Spring at Mrzle vode). Water was merrily gurgling somewhere inside rock interior, but not visible from sight. Yet the spring deserves a visit anyway! As does the entire solitary pathlet that brought me to Vršič summit. And one more thing: when the path below Vršič before crossing leveled out, I strained my eyes to spot possible path branch or at least some trace, perhaps passage toward Za Akom. But nothing was visible. Above path partly overgrown wall, below Second waterfall. Possible passage would need closer inspection. First next possibility could be where path crosses first gully. Up the gully and right into wooded terrain and onward toward west ridge of Vršič, quite above Za Akom tarn. Well, it holds: "Oštja Joža, you gotta try it". Maybe sometime indeed

j., I see it didn't pull you past bivak Za Akom directly to bivak under Špik (PP). Last time I had that in mind too, but weather was so fickle and it had started raining twice already, but changed its mind again, so I did too. Anyway, something must remain for next time too.

Recommend tackling PP crossing between tarns from Srce - Za Ak direction. Much more enjoyable. Especially due to high slip risk in the "gully".
