Storm in the mountains

Continuing the topic (Saturday storm)!!
Brana- branči
I too experienced a storm that raged briefly in K. and S. Alps (Saturday 2.8.08).
I survived the storm at the rescuers' hut at Okrešelj. Despite threatening clouds and distant thunder, some still showed interest in heading to Kamniško sedlo. I advised a family who had set off a few meters from the hut against the path (luckily they asked for advice).
With my son we headed on a fairly demanding path to Križ. We knew the weather forecast and played our card - very early!!
Wake up at 3:00 and start from below the waterfall as soon as possible (before 6:00). We hurried a bit and were approx. 20 min before the storm at the Okrešelj hut. Even if it caught us, we were already approx. 40 min from the rock and besides wetness probably nothing bad would hit us.
I carry some standard stuff in my backpack that I protect from moisture and some gear I add based on conditions and difficulty. Weather (internet) I always check before the hike and rely a bit on the sky view when I get up and pack. Surprise can still come!!
Never had a backpack cover (doesn't mean you don't need it).
Never, luckily haven't missed it in my long hiking years.
For me early hour is still the law!!
I am usually returning from the tour when "most" head out. So almost always I'm among those greeting ascending hikers.
So you meet me usually when I'm already descending and have done the path. Not always possible by 12 - so gear and protection very important when wandering mountains!
Glad to see many experienced hikers on the forum who like advising others just starting this nice activity!
Regards

I agree, early hour golden hour, but storms sometimes appear already in the morning and then getting up at 3am doesn't help.
Always when going to the mountains check the weather forecast and if storms are forecast midday, choose lower peak max two hours from start.

Just on Saturday, storms were forecast during the day, but it was already raining on Pokljuka at 5 a.m. When I read the weather forecast late in the evening, it said (the same on TV) that it would start to cloud over gradually in the morning, showers and storms in the afternoon. So we decided on early rising and the path to Planika, the next day nice forecast so path to the summit. When we got up at night, we couldn't see the sky, or rather it was full of stars in our area, the closer we got to the goal the worse it was, so early hour despite good forecast doesn't always hold.zmeden

You're right, early hour doesn't always save you from storm!
Usually, I don't go when forecast is bad!
Often, in this summer time they forecast afternoon storms, which you save from with early hour. For morning time my forecast is still - look (even at night) towards Golte and if I see stars rarely can storm surprise me before 12 noon - valid for this part of Slovenia!

Hello. Hope my post about the storm I survived that luckily ended well doesn't cause hard feelings. We too started this morning at 6am from Jermanca. But humid weather and heavy legs made the pace slow and we reached KS just before 9. There we had tea and around 9:45 headed to Brana. At the summit shortly after 11, so pretty fast. On descent near the protection we met a group just heading up. Due to wind, thick fog and distant thunder we suggested they turn back, but they continued. Storm caught us shortly after 12 near Okrešelj junction. As said, good it ended well. Have to say didn't expect such early storm, checked forecast, started early too. This taught me a lot for future mountain plans. Those we tried to convince to return with us turned around just below summit and luckily reached KS hut safely in really dangerous conditions.

Branči, no hard feelings. Just exchange of experiences we live in mountains. We know nature is always stronger than us and unpredictable.
Some events we can foresee or expect, some surprise us and will. Wish you many more beautiful moments in mountains!

Not long ago in the afternoon I decided (yes, bad decision, but since I like mountains), to climb Virnikov Grintovec. At the start the weather was still okay, higher at the saddle it clouded over, on the ridge thunder nearby but summit close so I went up. Just below the summit light rain, I didn't linger, turned back but weather worsened fast. Thunder above, rain, hail so not very "fun", though I wanted to watch it, met two descending very slowly. Rain almost constant, water running off me (had rain gear) but eased 30 min before the start, couple minutes later dark again at church "boom", ran to car and drove off. Thought no more storms to home but hailstorm hit at Kokra area, 1-2 cm hail on road, similarly rocks falling from steep parts on the right. Later counted dents on car, at home family said what a nice afternoon it was.

Hail Kokra, recorded when easing

@JusAvgustin

Approximately when did it pour? Were the walls wet before the storm (from previous days maybe)?

Asking because we planned to climb in the same area, but the forecast deterred us... Wonder if we weren't fooled. nasmeh

And you such advise others how and what, that they should stay in paradise on the "couch" while you yourselves go to the wall with such a forecast. zavijanje z očmi

JusAvgustin, please check on the camera when the storm caught you. I'm also interested, because we stayed home precisely because of the uncertain forecast. Thanks, and may luck follow you.
