Yesterday we climbed this beautiful mountain via ferrata G. Lipella. The ferrata itself is not among the most difficult in the Dolomites but it's quite long. Access to the start of the ferrata is more of a walk and it's nice to catch some morning sun. Since you spend some time (cca 500m) in a cave and then almost all the time on the west wall in the shade this tour is more suitable for the hottest days. Yesterday it was icy in several places where water flows and probably didn't thaw during the day. Descent via normal route to hut Giusani undemanding, from there to parking at hut Dibona express-scree and nice path. Flowers aren't lacking, but no such large gentians as last Sunday on Creta di Chianevate here, and everything is somewhat wilted; autumn is here. Note for future visitors; road to hut A. Dibona is 90% (looks fresh) asphalted.

but also the Dolomites in Italy tempt me for next year, so many paths await me but still I don't know how I'll manage it all or how it'll be with time. Since I want to make the most of time especially for ferrata paths I'm wondering when approx in Dolomites is the best time when snow melts or it's already passable?

On Wed 10.08.2011 after breakfast at 8 we headed from Dibona hut to ferrata Lipella. Weather was fantastically nice, temperature suitable too (around 5). In lower part of ferrata to three fingers (Tre Dita) on ledge crossing one black pitch it was quite icy. Cable and ledge frozen for 10m, so crampons really came in handy. Upper part of ferrata tough at entry to upper section and on second jump again icy cable and rock, so jams there. Ferrata very crowded, but everyone who started it also summited, return harder than ascent. Summit ridge of Tofane di Rozes unproblematic but careful on descent to half ridge, lots of scree on path, fall can be fatal here too.

Tue 14.8.2012 start at 8am from Dibona hut to ferrata Lipella. Morning still raining a bit, then ideal weather for ascent. Some places careful due to wet rock, also in tunnel, otherwise ferrata great climbing. Top some clouds but views to other Tofane. Descent via easier approach to hut Giusani and from there "highway" to Dibona. Pleasure AinJ

We went... Really unique experience, gotta say A.Dibona hut very surprised by friendliness, food, neatness also at Pomedes was ok....Ferrata Lipella very interesting varied...tunnel, exposed ledges (a bit wet because water falling from top ) demanding definitely "lightning rods"...second day we used for nearby huts or peaks....weather nice. Definitely repeat next year

On Wed 6.8.2014 we headed to Tofana di Rozes (past Rifugio Giussani). Path itself ok, nice weather. Below summit still some snow - hard as concrete but had crampons and ice axe no issues! Lots of people stuck on ridge below summit because actually didn't dare summit without gear! Except 2 Italians literally in sneakers..makes you sick seeing that! Followed by another great tour and wonderful day! Short video on link below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDpSVf-ipNs adding pics.. LP

Too bad you didn't do the ferrata Gianni Lipella, which goes up the NW wall of TdR; anyway you'd descend via normale past Giussani, but you'd do those wonderful exposed ledges of the Tofana gorge ... unforgettable ...

We saw how they were heading to the ferrata and I know where it goes, but this one was nice too. We'll definitely go next time when we return LP

If you're interested in the Dolomites, they're stunning, it's really a shame to go up and down the same path, most mountains are equipped with some ferrata for ascent, and down via normale ... I recommend these guides: Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites: Vol 1 & 2, you can find them on the website: http://www.cicerone.co.uk/ Believe me, the best 50 EUR spent on guides ... For example, on Marmolada where you were a few days ago, you should go up via ferrata Cresta Ovest (west ridge) and down via normale, then you have a complete mountain experience ... Around Cortina I recommend ferrata on Punta Anna and onwards to Tofana di Mezzo, unforgettable ... Stay safe and cheers

On Saturday again start at hut Dibona; ascent and return via Via normale, as deterioration with rain was forecast after noon. Path normally passable, hut Giussani nicely arranged, otherwise nice short tour to a 3000er.

Tofana di Rozes via ferrata Lippela. Just before exiting the ferrata water was flowing right along the route, so that part was quite unpleasant as it was slippery.

When we were there, end of August, it was icy; so yeah, rock n roll

What are the conditions on the path? Is winter gear needed?

On the webcam a larger snowfield above the ferrata exit is visible and another one on the ridge right below the summit. What is on the northern slopes towards Giussani I don't know....

I was on Tofana di Rozes on Sunday 15 July; (from Dibona hut past Giussani hut and to the summit). To Giussani hut you could also get by mountain bike, further on surely not anymore. Towards the summit there are still some snowfields that can be crossed without winter gear, but with a bit more caution. Also caution needed on the path to the summit due to quite some scree and fine stones on the rocks, which causes somewhat more uncertainty when walking.

I remember that rubble when we went up ferrata and down easier, quite nasty...
