Tolsti vrh and Mala and Velika Poljana

This afternoon I did a wonderful afternoon hike from Povelj. Above the village there is a small parking lot at the bend on the asphalted road. I head to the left side of the road, where a sign directs me to Velika Poljana. A steep, well-marked path takes me in a good hour and a half to our first alpine pasture - Velika Poljana. In between, there should be a spring, but this year there is no water. The hut on the pasture is open on weekends and holidays. It even says so at the start of the path. The area around the hut is newly arranged - praiseworthy. It takes ten minutes to the Mala Polana pasture. This is actually the real grazing pasture with a shepherd's hut that offers typical fare in the summer months. In past seasons, the shepherd was the famous Kranj painter. Next to the hut there is a large stable and drinking water - the spring never dries up. Then straight uphill to Tolsti vrh. It takes a good forty minutes to the summit. Here there is a logbook and stamp. Around the summit there is a fence that needs repairs. The summit offers views towards Storžič, the valley and Konščica pasture on the Tržič side. Back I take Ježa. When ascending towards the summit we see the junction for Ježa and further for Gozd. Soon we encounter the junction for Mala Polana. Here I went back. The path leads over the rocky Štajnarica, where three wire ropes assist us. The path is a bit exposed. Not for winter, as there are open sections and winter avalanche danger. Otherwise, this path is a pleasant variation on the hike. So we reach Mala Polana and down to the valley. For the up and down path I spent four hours. Back from Velika Polana you can run pleasantly. The day wasn't wasted. I recommend! Pictures later!

Today I started from Zalog, then up towards the Poljane. On the way, I decided to go first to Mala and then to Tolsti vrh, then back down and via Velika Poljana to check towards Storžič how far one can go safely.

To Mala Poljana I had to cross snow three times, which, except for the fact that it was already sinking in the morning, causes no problems. Since this snow is in a gully where the sun barely shines and there is still quite a lot of it, it won't melt soon.

From Mala Poljana towards Tolsti vrh snow starts almost immediately upon entering the forest and is on the path more or less almost to the summit, which is already almost completely bare. There isn't little snow and it can sink to as.. jezik . Well, but no big deal..

As already said, from the summit back to Mala Poljana and along the path behind Grebenc to Velika. On this path there is still a lot of snow, but it can be bypassed somehow, only towards the end there is no other way than to go over the snow, where it sinks nicely again.

From Velika Poljana I headed towards Storžič in the direction of Psica. Snow starts quite soon, but if going almost right along the ridge, it is bare for a while. Later, snow cannot be avoided if following the markers. There are no tracks on the path and it seems there has been no traffic here at least since the last snowfall. And the snow depth increases quickly, so it sinks to the knees. At the junction direction Psica - easier path to Storžič, I see that there is already snow right ahead on the easier path, so I go to check a bit up towards Psica, since from the junction due to the sunny exposure everything is bare. Right after the first bend, snow starts, which is over a meter deep and mostly sinks through. I go a bit further to the "first bump on the ridge", there I turn around and head back the same path to Velika Poljana, from there down back to the starting point. This path is completely bare. Grebenc, which was also kind of planned as a "reserve", is off today because of my laziness... mežikanje

Just below the summit of Tolsti vrh still real winter.....2

Down there is my home... :-)5
The view of the Storžičeva gully heavily filled with snow immediately made it clear that I wouldn't go far up this path ;-(6
On the return above Mala Poljana.7
Here I decide to check the path over Psica.8
Here I turned back... at the top of the first little bump on the left when looking up from the valley... Tolsti vrh behind9

The path from Povelj via Velika and Mala Poljana to Tolsti vrh is pleasant, steep enough and varied. Well, today due to clouds and fog it was more monotonous, but still I was satisfied with the tour. The path wet and slippery - what else after rain? - otherwise no special features.

Tolsti vrh despite height over 1700 m has no new snow. Today I also set off from Povelj via Mala Poljana to the summit. The path is fully bare, except in the forest above Mala Poljana and below the summit there are some patches of old partly frozen snow. Upon my arrival at the summit, fog with a snow shower arrived, but it soon stopped. There really were no views, but I got some exercise after a few days of lazing.

Hello.

On Wednesday I'm tempted to do for the first time the circular route Gozd – Tolsti vrh – Kriška gora - Gozd:
ascent - http://www.hribi.net/izlet/gozd_tolsti_vrh_skozi_jezo/3/125/92
descent - http://www.hribi.net/izlet/gozd_tolsti_vrh_cez_krisko_goro/3/125/93
if more time available, good conditions, extra strength and mood, I'd start from Golnik. Less likely, but you never know:
up: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/golnik_tolsti_vrh_skozi_jezo/3/125/2531
down: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/golnik_tolsti_vrh_cez_krisko_goro/3/125/2530

Now I see the weather forecast showing some snow tonight until morning, but then the rest of Tuesday and all Wednesday just sun. Temperatures a bit below 0°C at the top.

I heard somewhere that apparently there's no snow up there at all. But the path is quite muddy. Listed on hribi.net under recommended equipment for winter conditions are ice axe and crampons.

Will it be ok at least with those small crampons, gaiters or should I still take the ice axe? Any special hazards on the entire route? E.g. certain slippery dangerous sections, which might also + influence of newly fallen snow depending on its amount + based on experience how trodden the whole path is?

Thanks for help, and happy new year conquering summits!

Before last night's snowfall there was none, for today I don't know, but probably minimal.
Take crampons, definitely no need for ice axe.

Usually I went to Tolsti vrh once a year from Gozd. Lately I've ascended it for the third time from Povelj via Mala Poljana. The tour is excellent for maintaining fitness, as there's about 1000 m ascent over a short distance. Today fully spring conditions. Excellent views from the summit in all directions. On Košuta I noticed quite a few new ground avalanches in the area of Malega Kladiva, Kladiva, Tegoška gora and Tolste Košute. Yesterday there weren't that many.

Does anyone have info on the current condition of the path from Gozd through Ježa to Tolsti vrh and then along the ridge to Koča na Kriški gori? Is it passable at all (fallen trees due to ice)?

Also how much snow and how passable are those steep meadows? Is the path trodden or slippery dangerous? I have crampons, but no ice axe.

hi
Above you have info on closed paths. It says the path from Gozd to T.vrh is closed. As for snow, here's this. Those crossings over meadows on the south side are usually icy in spring and dangerous for avalanches. Good luck

ghost, two of us broke trail on Saturday up to Tolsti vrh. No fallen trees, trail is broken, but it's true that lower snow is totally rotten, totally soaked and needs great caution crossing meadows, and stuff waiting to slide down. A couple avalanches have gone already, but caution still not superfluous nasmeh

Today all big shops invited pensioners for sales with discounts. I rather chose Tolsti vrh via both Poljanas. Didn't go wrong.

Mrki, you chose very smartly. Wonderful day, wonderful pictures. Shops anyway didn't have the last "discount" of the year.

Today from Povelje over Velika and Mala Poljana to Tolsti vrh and back the same ascent path. There's already a trodden path everywhere. Warm, no wind and excellent views.

Hi, I'm wondering if the path from Povelje to Velika Poljana is very icy? Years do take their toll on caution.....zadrega

Can't be that big.. but in winter time it's good to have chains in the backpack on such paths.. If you have them, take them along and no problem.

The path is not icy; the lower part is a bit snowy, on Velika Poljana there is more snow and it sinks in. Otherwise now there is already a good path.
