Travnik, Plaski Vogel

Print
boštjanko29. 08. 2023 22:54:45
27.8. from Pod Zjabci to Travnik and Plaski Vogel.

The start looked quite miserable when a few drops sprinkled my buddy and me at the starting point.mrk pogled Both agreed with my theory "bad start, good end".nasmeh
The path to Planina za Skalo passed very quickly on "auto pilot". The rocky jump secured with a chain isn't overly overgrown with nettles. The path through Travnik Valley is quite well trodden.
The valley is really picturesque and enchanted me years ago with its fairytale quality.
Continuation up the valley (more and more off-trail), then left into steep grass to Travnik Saddle. From here right along the grassy ridge with wonderful views. At the top of Travnik we sat a bit; the cold wind already hinted that summer is ending.
Few come here to enjoy the peace - the last entry was 4 days ago.

Continuation to Plaski Vogel initially looks easy, but crossing steep grass didn't feel too good. If they were just a bit wet... There aren't many cairns either.
Descent from the top of Plaski Vogel to the saddle at the end of Travnik Valley and then descent down the left side of the valley over scree (here the path is most obviousmežikanje).

In the middle of Travnik Valley I was just explaining to my buddy that this is one of the last hidden corners before Czechs and other foreigners. Then we spot two dots descending between Čelo and Vršac. Later we learn they are a young Belgian couple...nasmeh

In total about 1700m ascent and ca 20 km. Thanks Edo for participating in pathfinding!

They were good. We went to Travnik last year. I remember it was enough walking for one day. Plaski Vogel we left maybe for sometime.zmeden

The tour is nicely doable, just choose the right starting pointmežikanje. If you start at the first ramp-starting point for Čisti vrh, you don't have anything to do in 7h, max 8h. Of course nothing is marked therenasmeh

Last year we needed 10 hours and 46 minutes for Travnik. Without rushing.

Belgians already here? mrk pogled

Well, but those two probably at least knew how to walk, otherwise they wouldn't show up here velik nasmeh

It's also one of my favorite tours. nasmeh

p.s. there are already several threads open with Plaski Vogel. Title not identical, but descriptions of the identical tour.

@garmont, I wish you would fulfill your wish as soon as possible nasmeh Just order nice stable weather beforehand.

@darinka4, I believe Plaški Vogel wouldn't be too big a bite for you...velik nasmeh
And in these beautiful places it's hard to rush. How else would you absorb all those beauties, solitude, wilderness...

@Trobec, I too was a bit surprised by this otherwise friendly couple.
They weren't on any summit, but it's already praiseworthy they didn't get lost. They had very minimalist backpacks though...

And if you don't reach the roof and true mettle not the first time, not the second, try again and again and again. (Tone Pavček) The goal was Plaški Vogel. We were on Travnik last year and checked out our desired peak for today. But we really weren't quite sure if we'd make it. Around six in the morning we saw a hiker in Žaga heading out on a tour. We had some more driving to the barrier in Vrsnik. Found the junction by navigation, because it's really no longer visible. It should be the upper path joining the lower after about two hours' walk. In the forest it was completely lost due to leaves. We went up the gully steeply. Then on steep grasses where you had to watch for a secure step. Above Planina za Skalo this path goes. Then through Travnik Valley. Where cairns were, but there weren't any. But approximately you know where to go. Two guys overtook us just before entering Vršac. We continued over rocks and scree to the saddle. We checked out the path, where we'd descend to the grassy part right and then across steep SE slopes to a somewhat gentler ridge. Then to the summit it wasn't far. Here quite a few cairns were helpful. We were surprised by the beautiful world here. We were alone on the summit. It was warm. Almost no wind. With views where everything was so close. The descent by the ascent path was still waiting. That's what we chose. A tour you don't forget. (06.09.2023)

I don't quite understand which path you took that got lost for you. The hardest is at the start right after the little bridge, there it's easy to miss the turn right. The easiest is past the weekend house up, but g. Š. doesn't like you walking through his yard. From there to the final ascent to Travnik the path is nicely visible all the way.

First two km on gravel road. Then at bend turn right. By navigation we found that junction for the path that once was. Now barely visible. We went from barrier under village at Skali. On map lower (blue) is well-known path. Probably you've walked there. We took upper (red). Unknown to us. It's drawn on some maps. Don't know if anyone uses it at all.

mirank: That path darinka walked is mostly unknown to us, we know the one above weekend house and past bench to pl. Za Skalo.

Well, I remembered we used that path over twenty years ago or more, when returning from Travnik with PD, under Kuk we turned right and didn't even reach the planina at all. Guide directed us there (already at start steep incline, my colleague tripped there and gained incredible speed in fall, but luckily all ended well), later the path got lost for us and I know exactly he didn't know exactly where anymore and we wandered a bit, but somehow found direction and got to start. I still often remember that path!

Already from Darinka's first pictures it was clear that it's not the same path. But it's an interesting fact, because then a circular route into Travnik Valley is possible.
I don't know how Travnik Valley looks in the summer months, but now it didn't seem anything special to me. But the view up there is incredible. I don't know if there's such a view on the Julijce anywhere else. Planina za Skalo is also fascinating, which is really wonderful. Nice that they maintain the buildings.

Strange that the guide took you on that path. There in those steep grasses it's dangerous for slipping. Especially when wet. Looks like they used it sometimes. Because after so many years it's still visible. Also where it joins the lower one into Travnik Valley we found it without trouble. Also on descent. But somewhat lower, when the forest ends, we saw a junction and a better preserved path, for which we didn't know where it leads. We guessed maybe to Plaški Kuk? Yes, they renovated those buildings for Planina za Skalo. Already last year it was visible when we walked there.
The small path is still visible.1

Darinka yes, but there was a problem because we lost the proper path midway. I remember the steep slope right after we turned right and there Alenka slipped. By a miracle she stopped! In that steep slope!

That "old" building on Planina Za Skalo, before renovation, around 1995, was awesome. Open, i.e. unlocked, fireplace, you could light up and cook right over the fire ... Good old times nasmeh

Yes LG you're right, we don't use that upper path. But I remember there's another variant in between, some shortcut from that protruding forest path directly to the lower-blue variant brings you about 20 min above the weekend house. Pok Igor had keys to those ramps and obviously drove in. We met him above the alpine pasture and when descending together he turned somewhere onto a visible path upwards, saying he has a car there. That was the last time we saw him....
