What kind of mountains are these? Do the marked trails lead to the summits? How long does it take to hike? Difficulty?
In September I'm heading to the sea but would like to pop to some hill in between. Thanks for the answers, Marč.

Driving. To the Dom na Zavižanu you can go by car from Jurjevo near Senj. From there more options. Plenty of info on Velebit on SummitPost if English is no problem and on HPS forum.

It would be much easier if you said more about where you're going. The Velebit ridge is very long.

A few days ago we visited Velebit. If anyone wonders what Croatian mountains are like you can view some descriptions with photos at the following link. http://www.hribi.net/gorevgorovju.asp?id=30

You'll find lots of answers in the guide "Hrvatske Planine" by Dr. Željko Poljak.
Maps from the Smand/Smerke edition have all marked trails and other paths drawn in.
EVERYTHING CAN BE ORDERED AT THE HPS OFFICE.
War consequences:
Destroyed and not rebuilt homes on Visočica and Štirovac, as well as the partially mine-cleared Lika side of South Velebit.
The shortest way to get to know Velebit is if you hike the VPP/Velebit mountaineering path lasting 7 days from Zavižan to Paklenica.
Since there are few huts/mostly shelters, crowds are possible in summer but in September there is no problem. For all detailed information about Velebit on the HPS forum and I myself will answer most questions.

Last week I was at Mali and Veliki Paklenica. Super circular trail from Selin, where the national park entrance is, to Mali Paklenica, then to the mountain hut and then to Velika Paklenica (about 5.5 hours total hiking), where it's almost a highway for us hikersvelik nasmeh I was very surprised because at the top the forest starts and up to the hut everything is nicely green, stream flowing... and pleasant coolness that fits perfectly after a few days by the sea...
Really nice trail, except the heat, on the asphalt from Starigrad to Selin, where I had an apartment... Recommend! Best regards
p.s. I bought the map in Starigrad at the Tourist Agency 1:25000 Paklenica. It's good to have it, because if you're going for the first time you might get lost...nasmeh

This year's vacation in Starigrad-Paklenica I also used for two morning trips to the hills. First trip: Mali Vaganac - Veliko Rujno - Bojin kuk - Krilati kuk - Veliki Vaganac - Mali Vaganac. The trail itself is easy except the upper part of Bojinac, towards the summit we also encounter steel cables that help on the most exposed sections. At the top the view is for ''''gods''''. On the trail we make a nice loop and return nicely to the starting point, where in this weather a nice warm vehicle awaits us - no problem. To the sea is 15 minutes drive. Second trip: Veliko Rujno - Stražbenica - Struge - Vaganski vrh (highest peak of Velebit - 1757 m) - Lipa staza - Ramiči - Velika Paklenica - Starigrad. Trip in the style of hiking in the lower Bohinj mountains, unfortunately I have to admit it was even nicer at least for me. Easy trail (except the demanding descent from the summit towards Lipa staza) with nice views, let the pictures say the rest. For this hike you need to organize transport to the starting point.

Ps: Post to calm the passionmežikanje.

Best, Matej

Wonderful photos, nice views. I was there a few years ago too, went to Aniča kuk and Bojin kuk. On the latter there were pegs the thickness of thinner rebar (6mm) for help back then, how is it now? But I was there in May when it's not so hot yet.

Nice tour and nice photos. How long did the second tour to Vaganski vrh and back take?

Best regards!

on the part where there are pegs now there's also a new steel cable, which covers a larger part of the path than the pegs themselves.

I went alone, some still don't know how to walk. First tour approx. 5-6 hours, second tour 8 hours, if I started where I finished (Starigrad) then another 3 hours extra. Just so you know, I usually cover normed times in our mountains about 30% faster. Normed ascent time Starigrad - Vaganski vrh is 8 hours.

Our first acquaintance with the largest mountain ridge on the eastern Adriatic coast thrilled us so much that we will definitely return. The trails are exemplarily marked; except in Velika Paklenica, we only met occasional hikers, and the views are of course special because of the sea. We also visited Tulove grede, Sveto brdo and Bojin kuk. More on the link

Edina - as always a nice report. Others besides swimming and sunbathing are also discovering the mountainous world of the Adriatic, so we don't fall completely out. And happy trails.

VELEBIT 22.-26.5.2019

End of May is a wonderful time for exploring Velebit. Eight of us gathered plus the guide, total three guys and six girls. Our guide has been exploring and guiding on Velebit for many years, modestly saying "he knows a bit". With him we walked part of this vast and diverse mountain ridge.
Despite rainy April continuing into May, we set off. To Rijeka the weather was cold and gloomy, then the sun shone. Wednesday afternoon we were already at Zavizan (1594). Surprise for our guide and us was meeting Zavizan's legend Ante, long-time caretaker and meteorologist at Zavizan where he spent 44 years and 9 months. We climbed some nearby peaks with nice views of Krk, Prvić, Grgur islands…
First day of exploring our goal was Premužić Trail from Zavizan to Alan. We enjoyed the really well-laid path built 1930-1933. In between we detoured to Gromovača (1676m), 20 min ascent. From there great views to Rab, Grgur, Goli otok. The path passed Rossijevo shelter, needing repairs after recent storm. At Alan (1340m) we got hospitality from friendly Zagreb team. We strolled to nearby peaks enjoying Kvarner islands views.
Second day we climbed to Šatorina (1622), great viewpoint. Path pleasant, well-laid. That day we got soaked, even hail. Plateau full of blooming gentians, pity no sun. Descended to Ogradjenica shelter to dry, guide's Split friends Neno and Ante lit the stove. Then ascent over pass, descent to start, drive and visit Skorpios shelter, our last base in Baške Oštarije at Dijana. Hostel food good, atmosphere pleasant. Nearby Zagreb guy runs interesting Velebit camp, worth visiting.
Third day climbed Visibaba (1160m). Besides hike, goal was to see Degenia velebitica flower. Few sites left for this small yellow flower and we found it. At Visibaba top we rested in grass, sunbathed, chatted, enjoyed exceptional views to Pag, Lošinj, Silba, Unije… Followed circular tour to start passing climbing areas.
In these 4.5 days thanks to excellent guide we saw a lot. Charmed by Velebit's expanse, diversity, wilderness. All way admired blooming edelweiss, lungwort, narcissus, peonies, bellflowers... and degenia. Besides part of Premužić Trail we did parts of Adriatica and Terezijana. End with coffee in Karlobag, drive to Novi Vinodolski, through Gorski Kotar to Ravno village, lunch and safe home... Thanks guide, we'll return to Velebit.
