Veliki Rob

We left the car at the end of Vrtovin village, where there's a small parking lot. From there follow the markings for Kucelj. The trail leads first through the forest, then across a clearing, then again through a nice clean woodland....then you reach a crossroads where various paths meet and turn left towards Veliki Rob. The path runs constantly along the edge and you can see the goal from afar because there's a large cross on top. The view extends to Vipava Valley, Trstelj, Gulf of Trieste, Julian Alps and nearby Trnovski Forest, well today it was a bit cloudy but still scenic. The logbook is stored in a nice blue envelope. We were the first and I think the only visitors this year, on nearby Kucelj there were probably more visitors. Almost no snow. We returned down the same path. I think now is the ideal time to visit, no tick troubles. zavijanje z očmi

Hello! I have a couple questions for locals.
Any "snow" mežikanje in your parts? How much on top?
How are paths to summit (from Vitovlje or Lokavec) now, icy in upper parts?
Better (nicer, more interesting, sunnier) from Lokavec via Kucelj to Veliki Rob or from Vitovlje?

Thanks in advance

Haven't been up there recently, but assume no snow on top. Maybe some in the forest on north side. No ice for sure. Re which way up, depends how much time you take.

We got so spoiled by recent "high plus" temps that today it didn't even cross our minds to tramp new snow somewhere below zero. Better turned to warmer Primorska... even there gloves were welcome mežikanje...So, started in Stomaž, past Anton Bavčer hut at Čavn up to Kucelj. Plenty of day left, so continued to Veliki Rob. Wanted a loop, so descended other side, first on "official" marks to Vitovlje, then after say 15 min spotted some blue marks leading left and down. By map and wanting back to Stomaž, right direction, so followed. Upper descent steep and quite "scree", need to watch not to slide. Lower joined transverse "official" marked path past hunter hut back to Stomaž.
Beautiful blooming spring hike, with pure "Mediterranean" feel....when you smell countless pines and walk soft paths thickly "carpeted" with pine needles, sometimes pinch yourself to realize you're not by sea but thousand+ meters higher... mežikanjenasmeh....And yes, too cold for ticks and snakes..to my great joy. velik nasmeh
P.S. Heading to Veliki Rob we thought very little visited peak....but checking logbook, counted 31 visitors yesterday eeknasmeh

The photos of primroses were especially pleasing to me. Of course can't miss your path description, always read with pleasure.
And seeing blooming wisteria thought of mine, just starting to bud but Monday's hail "spoiled" it. Of course it'll recover, but sight so sad.

Nice loop tour and nice photos! You were right! nasmeh Veliki Rob is unfortunately a poorly visited peak, but since there was an Easter hike to Mala gora that day, it seems many hikers chose this variant too. Best regards

Vitovska circular trail is really a nice choice, picturesque, with lots of history, even energy points you can find on it. We park above Vitovje village, first stage goal is at St. Mary's chapel. From there along Napoleonic path and along the great wall to Sekulak. Somewhere at 700 m snow dusting starts but more than a few cm of snow can't be found up to the top. From Sekulak we first descend and cross the slopes towards Veliki Rob. Look at that, when we tackle the last 300 elevation meters the sun beats the clouds and it becomes a day that no one would bet on at the start. From the top almost very good views, even Krn peeked out there at the end. We descend circularly back to Sekulak. Here in the snow tree markings are a bit missing, but we found it, although no one walked here today, there was more snow than on the southern side. On the return we also visit the shelter of the blind St. Lucija and Vitovsko Lake, then back, finally among blooming lowlands. In Primorska forsythias, tulips and fruit trees are already blooming, although a few hundred meters higher it's still winter. It will be, it will be... nasmeh

On Saturday a group of colleagues went on a circular tour along the slopes of Čaven. For the starting point we chose Lokavec village and from there continued along the marked path towards Čaven, but only to the "Srednječavenska path".
We continued left along the mentioned path, which runs along the lower Čaven ridge below Kuclj to the branch where the path to the top of our first point - Čaven 1186m branches right upwards.
From here we continue to the second point - Veliki Rob 1237m, which in nice weather is an extremely panoramic summit (view of Vipava Valley, Trstelj, Gulf of Trieste, Dolomites, Julian Alps and nearby Trnovo Forest).
We continue the path along the Čaven ridge to our third point - Kucelj 1237m, from which there is a nice view of Primorska and the sea in the background. Then descent from Kuclj towards the Anton Bavčer hut on Čaven for well-deserved jota and beer.
Stop and descent to our starting point - Lokavec village.
The circular tour is extremely nice, varied and requires quite some fitness as it takes about 8-9 hours with stops of course.

Best,
Mirannasmeh

A nice day was forecasted, region of suitable color, so for morning warm-up we planned a traverse along the beautiful Srednječavenska path, ascent to Veliki Rob, then Kucelj, visit to the hut on Čavn and return via Modrasovec. The weather soured during the day and somehow the will for Modrasovec ran out velik nasmeh.

Srednječavenska or Bošnarska path is a real gem, which leads for kilometers along the slopes of Mala gora and Čavn from Predmeja towards Vitovlje. It hardly goes up and down and has numerous branches all the way towards the edge of Trnovo Forest. It's pleasant and mostly soft, but at the same time narrow and occasionally exposed. Ticks especially like visitors, who feel great on these warm slopes. Some repellent or long pants won't hurt.

The upper edge offers some peaks nicely connected by marked paths. Some confusion due to logging only on the path from Veliki Rob to Kucelj. Due to fog some hikers diligently searched for the right direction. From Kucelj to the hut on Čavn there are no uncertainties, nor on the descent to Predmeja.

Nice loop, 18 km long, with 1000 elevation gain. Recommended nasmeh.

Over Col we drove to Predmeja and descent to the tunnels. Then the enjoyable Srednječavenska path. Finally sunny, nice weather and chance to visit Primorska. Pleasure walking among pines all the way to the branch for Veliki Rob. Two options, left a bit longer, but we went directly up the steep one. It is really steep, maybe a few years ago it wouldn't seem so to us, but they say some training is needed... On Veliki Rob quite some hikers, views to the sea, we observe already walked paths from Trstelj to Cerj. And from Sabotin to Korada. On the way to Kovk there's still some patches of snow, adders, also snowdrops, primroses, marmots. We go past Mala gora and to the starting point. It added up to 20 km and 900 elevation gain, excellent tour.

Darinka's, Bagi's and someone else's reports convinced me to visit this, to me very distant part of our country.
From the tunnels along Srednječavenska path long traverse to the branch for Veliki Rob and then steeply up, and right to the top. Descent over Kucelj and past the hut on Čavn back to the tunnels. Except for abundance of ticksjezen, everything excellent.
Nice path, full of flowers, which gives you the feeling that you're much higher.nasmeh

After rainy Saturday we went looking for sun in Vipava Valley. Well, there was quite some, just at the top it clouded over. We started from the parking at the end of Vrtovin village. Interesting village, from the main road junction we drove to its end another approx. 15 minutes. Otherwise the path is very well trodden and marked all the way. Locally to the plateau also slippery due to yesterday's rain. Most of the way walked in short sleeves. Middle part is really recreational, the little path doesn't let up at all and leads steeply up. When you cross Srednječavenska you just take a deep breath and continue even steeper all the way to the ancient Napoleonic path. It added up to a bit more than 900 m elevation gain. nasmeh
