Skymark, are crampons no longer needed for crossing Dolgi hrbet or is it still good to take them just in case?

At the entrance to the Skuta wall there are quite a few frozen patches, which can be overcome with some caution.
Dolgi hrbet is snow-free.
Sunny side of Grintovec again in patches. Same here - careful.
In principle, crampons are not needed.

Skuta-Dolgi Hrbet-Kralj-Kalška gora (25.12.17)
Žmavčarji had a "concrete" base from the forest edge onwards. Never experienced such a thing here in seven years. Ascent to Skuta from the incredibly snow-covered chimney of medium difficulty. We climbed the virgin Dolgi Hrbet, though one part was really tough. Descent down the gully then to another gully that brought us to the north side of Grintovec. From the top to Cojzova then to the ridge of Kalška gora. Via hunting trail over Kalce to the valley.

Damn!! In summer when I run this loop, always on descent from Grintovec I ponder whether to go "do I feel like it" over Kalce or just drop past the truck! nasmeh

Does anyone have fresh info on this route? For Skuto I saw on the forum no issues, mainly interested in the section from the start of the ascent to Dolgi hrbet via Mlinarsko sedlo to Grintovec. Thanks for any info.

Depends on what you consider special. On the slopes by the bivouac there is still quite some snow, also under Skuto. Yesterday and today it's colder, so that snow this weekend won't be soft.

With crampons really no problem.

On that tour you mentioned you'd probably need winter gear on the north side of Grintovca. That's the ascent part under Grintovec summit. Might be dry already, crampons, ice axe then no problem.

Mlinarsko sedlo is dry, north wall of Grintovca too. Only snow below the saddle, between bivouac and saddle on fairly flat part - about 15m. No issues for me descending.

20.6. over Žmavčarje a bit before the bivouac smaller snowfield, which is easily and almost without extra effort bypassed. On the screes below Rinkami there are some not so innocent snowfields - which will be much more problematic after the forecasted cooling. Especially the last one is problematic - right before entering the wall of Skuta from the scree (steep and quite long runout). I descended 50-100m on the scree already before the penultimate snowfield, and tackled the last one from bottom up right before the wall entry - without ice axe I would have turned back (had only small crampons, which I didn't put on - had better grip with boots). From here on (Skuta-Dolgi hrbet-Mlinarsko sedlo-Grintovec-Cojz) I didn't touch snow anymore. First time on Dolgi hrbet - great path (quite airy), definitely highly recommend.

Yesterday I finally did this tour, which I've had planned for a while. Wonderful tour that gives you a lot. As for the fixed protection, condition is ok. No rockfalls noticed. The snowfield under Skuta was partly frozen. I had to carve my own steps. Recommend ice axe. I went slowly. For the whole trip, with shorter and longer breaks, I took 11h 10min. Good luck!

Today with son (10 years) start at 5.30 at Žagana peč. Then over Žmavčarje to bivouac and on to Skuta. Snowfield before wall entry still persists, narrower now (ca. 5 m), bypass at least as far as I could see not possible. Footprints there, but filled in. Despite warm weather, quite hard. So I made fresh steps with ice axe, because of the little one. On Skuta quite quickly, at 8.30. Since we have plenty of time and will, and weather holds, we hop to Dolgi hrbet, then from Mlinarsko sedlo to Grintovec, arriving at 11.30. There somewhat threatening clouds dissipate again, so back to Mlinarsko sedlo, check for Czechs at bivouac under Grintovec (was it empty?!), then take hunter's path through Gamsov skret, enjoying view of chamois herd. Fixed protection on exposed ledge in excellent condition. At car at 15.30.

Skuta-D.Hrbet-Kralj-over Kalce to valley (16.02.19)

At forest exit at 1350m height put on crampons, snow like concrete. Nothing else to expect, due to daytime thaw and night freeze it has to be like that. Conditions for Skuta top-notch, especially the flank. Ridge to Dolgi Hrbet has a cm less snow than last year and is therefore much more ideal than last year's. Descent to pode and up gully to north side of Grintovec. Conditions top. Never better. Roof without issues. But not good to climb up there in such heat, because on terrain under roof nasty ice balls form. At late hour they were ascending today, some on summit around 13.00. From Cojzova then towards Kalska gora or to saddle. To cache now in this heat not safe at all, morning still ok. On hunter's, over Kalce to valley.

Some impressions from Saturday's hike (1.8.). We parked at five in the morning a bit above Žagana peč. Already tons of cars, luckily most people head to Cojzova koča. Path over Žmavčarje to Skuto nicely passable, all fixed protection impeccable. To Grintovec we went under Dolgi hrbet, over Mlinarsko sedlo. Altogether 14.5 km, almost 2200 m elevation gain, 10.5 hours.
So many people as this time I have never met in the mountains. Grintovec summit was completely full.

On Saturday started still in the dark from Konca over Žmavčarje to bivouac, in front of which some hikers slept, inside no space left. First to Skuto from there detour to Štruco and first time to Dolgi hrbet. Continue to Mlinarsko sedlo and Grintovec. On first two summits alone, on Dolgi hrbet three, Grintovec ant hill, no better at Cojzova koča. Nice loop tour, recommend to experienced ones nasmeh

I ask the gentlemen what the path is like and they say exciting... how right they are, it really thrilled me :)

Also this Saturday 5.9. almost everything was parked. With my friend we head over Žmavčarje towards bivouac under Skuto. We advance slowly, as she didn't feel the best, so she decides to skip summits this time and go directly to bivouac under Grintovec. I continue to Skuto and since the day was wonderful, no cloud (just windy on top), further over Dolgi hrbet. Lots of people on Skuto, then retreat to solitude....met 2.
On ridge under summit she messaged she's already waiting in front of bivouac, so shorten tour and leave Grintovec visit for next time. Together then towards Cojzova koča.
Weather for Sunday still promising, so overnight and morning to Kalška gora...towards Kalški greben all in fog.
